when I was trying to look up images of ukiyo-e prints as reference a while ago it was literally almost all AI and I was like *screaming*

I am a full-on death of the author zealot, in that I don't think understanding the artist is useful in understanding the art But I see a lot of people trawling through the art for Clues about the artist, and calling it literary criticism. It's not. 1/

I think this is basically true, but I think there's a corrollary that shitty art *is* often legitimately and inadvertantly revealing of the author's character - e.g. THE ROOM (2003) being a completely on-the-nose rendering of Tommy Wiseau's own ego and insecurities.
