Gettysburg Address 2.0 just dropped. This is DJT yesterday, speaking in Shenksville, PA.

Not many people know that one of the pivotal battles at Gettysburg took place on “Talk like a pirate” day.

I am now just learning that most people don’t know that every white person in 19th century America talked like a pirate. I thought this was common knowledge.

The people behind him are so bored. Trump is committing the cardinal sin.
Avatar
Must have happened at the beginning of the *second* hour. Scrolling usually starts after the first scintillating hour of oratory.
Avatar
I watched a bit of it and they were pumped at the beginning. One dude looked like he was finding Jesus at a tent revival

The flotsam and jetsam of a disordered and degraded mind.

Apropos of nothing, one the best things ever made is finally coming off of ad-ruined Hulu soon and over to so far ad-free Netflix: Black Sails. Not many things are as electrifying, or payoff "hey why didn't they deal with that" but then "that" is an entire season, w/ a perfect ending. & also, gay
Avatar
And also, not gay! One of the best 100% romantic, yet 100% asexual, relationships committed to film in modern memory. Also anti-fascist. Godamn
Avatar
Sorry, not apropos of nothing, apropos of pirates
Avatar
Pirates come from Pittsburgh, which is also in Pennsylvania and ends with a burg sound, so it makes complete sense.
Avatar
There's a great video on this I saw recently, about how far back we could go and still understand English speakers (and read English) and it is amusing to realize everyone talked like pirates and I personally feel cheated we no longer speak like that.
Avatar
we used to be a real country, yarrr

He's thinking of the songs Running Up That Hill, and The Grand Old Duke of York.

Robert E. Lee - rebel, traitor, secret pirate.
Avatar
I thought it’s that Lee was a leprechaun?
Avatar
Avatar
I was going to say this demands a kate bush pirate video parody…
Avatar
Or a leprechaun. "They're always after me lucky charms. And me slaves. Ok, mostly me slaves."

Yet again, Trump sweatily vamps his way through the 2nd-grade oral presentation he didn’t bother to prepare for. And most of the country will never hear about it.
Avatar
The way I just burst out laughing
Avatar
There was a concerted push to not show his speeches after his first campaign, for good reason. I think it might be smart to start showing them again.
Avatar
I don’t think news outlets should just run raw, wall-to-wall footage of his rallies, like they did in 2016. But when he rants & rambles like this, & shows clear signs of squirrel-brain &/or authoritarianism, it should be covered. And not cut up into just the snippets where his words make some sense.
Avatar
I think a couple minute delay with commentary over top makes sense. When he does the Robert E Lee thing, ideally that commentary is like, "we couldn't find that quote..."
Avatar
Avatar
Go to Gettysburg and praise Lee is quite a choice.
Avatar
You do not, under circumstances, gotta hand it to him
Avatar
Robert E. Lee, he's no longer in favor. Huge, if true.
Avatar
Oh crap, should I have taken him off my Christmas card list? It’s so hard to keep track of who’s been canceled.
Avatar
You fight for one little racist rebellion, and that's all anyone ever talks about.
Avatar
The rule of goats, civil war edition.
Avatar
Not surprising that a man that wants to unmake the Union is lamenting the mistakes of Robert E. Lee.
Avatar
One thing you can't say is that Trump hasn't learned the lesson of hills.
Avatar
As someone who grew up near Gettysburg and thus toured it multiple times as part of school and Boy Scout functions as well as learned the major elements of it several times over... wow.
Avatar
Lee, who famously didn’t tell his soldiers to fight uphill at Gettysburg
Avatar
"Wow, that was a big mistake" --Robert E. Lee
Avatar
He really makes history come alive.
Avatar
In much the same way Victor Frankenstein did.
At Appomattox Courthouse he also coined the phrase “so that just happened”
Avatar
We already *have* @dril.bsky.social -- we don't need a lazy knock-off!
Avatar
It reads like Trump wanted to read some Lost Cause hagiography of Lee that throws Longstreet under the bus, but got bored on page 6.
They shouldn’t have treated Old Pete like that!
Yeah. They did it at least twice—Little Round Top and Pickett’s Charge.
