I find it hard to believe those companies would have access to the same infrastructure and/or talent pool in TX as they had in CA.

Painting is very, very difficult. I've invested countless hours and many of my own dollars honing my skills. I sell work here and there but will probably never recoup my lifetime investment. By contrast, I never formally trained for my day job. I enjoy it fine, it's easy, and pays six figures.
