this is kind of bleak, but it's interesting to be in Kenya and see people discuss police brutality without ever blaming the victims. there isn't a contingent of loud white people saying Black people deserve it. and it's a relief and allows folks to be focused on the true enemy

Teddy Roosevelt was shot while giving a speech 3 weeks before the 1912 election, was so fucking tough that he *stayed to finish the speech* and then lost to Woodrow Wilson 435 electoral votes to 88
George Wallace was literally put in a wheelchair by his attempted assassination and he still lost

A commenter on TikTok asked Imani Barbarin if there is a way to call someone stupid for not voting without being ableist. Imani: Why do you feel you need to be able to call someone stupid? If your goal is actually to get them to vote, why do you need to insult them? And do you think it will work?

Check out "Robert Hemmings's Signature," a new Monticello podcast episode I'm featured in. My colleagues and I discuss a recently recovered document confirming Hemmings's literacy. Learn more at the link and thread below. www.monticello.org/exhibits-eve...
Every now and then, a document stops me in my tracks. That happened today, with a document that bears the signature of Robert Hemmings, an enslaved valet to Jefferson who was in Philadelphia during the writing of the Declaration of Independence. 1/5
