If the United States loses its democracy, it’ll be the dumbest slide into authoritarianism in history. Others cases had mass unemployment, a major war, something. None have done it with low unemployment, rising real wages, declining crime, and no troops fighting in foreign wars.

I would like to see the national media covering this say the name of the man who was killed by police outside the convention zone today. According to one of my Marquette colleagues, his name was Samuel Sharpe.

By "unity" they mean concession by the centre and left that their goals and plans are within the normal bounds of American politics. And they're not wrong. One party states have unity. Democracy isn't about unity. It's about peaceful contestation.

Extraordinary caveat in the 1586 will of Robert Tower of Essex. Robert bequeathed his house to his wife & son, if they died it went to Queen's College to educate poor children in divinity; but this latter provision was rescinded should 'religion alter and masse be received' [!] [PROB 11/69]

My personal experience at bluesky has been fantastic, much of the good of pre-Musk Twitter and none of the bad. Yet I’ve never felt as pessimistic about the future of this app as I do right now, watching another important Black voice get run off the platform. Seriously, what the fuck, people?

The Declaration of Independence was a series of grievances the colonists enumerated against King George III. The colonists wrote the document explaining why they were breaking away. There are a few line items having to do with colonial dissatisfaction with migration policies. (1/12)

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

If Trump were to personally shoot someone on Fifth Avenue: Not immune. (Probably. Maybe.) If he were to order the army to massacre thousands on Fifth Avenue: Immune. (Very clearly, under the decision.) But from a constitutional perspective, the latter is the grave danger to guard against.

/7 Justice Roberts smug and superior dismissal of the dissents’ concerns seems to come to us via time warp from some time that never knew Trump. The danger of lawlessness he poses are manifest — he and his followers brag of them. Only a liar or fool would dismiss them.

The Supreme Court’s ruling putting presidents above the law must be understood not simply as a grant of immunity for past crimes, but an enthusiastic endorsement of those he will commit if given the chance. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

There is no constitutional text that says presidents are immune from all criminal law. Nor was it the intent of the authors of the Constitution or any amendments. It is inconsistent with American precedent and tradition. They just made it up.

This Originalist™ court has effectively immunized both the president and all federal law enforcement officers from any meaningful accountability. Because if there are two things the Founders cherished, it's the power of a king-like executive and armed agents of the government to act with impunity.
