dave. dave. this is way too much information to put in public. i could figure this out in like half an hour

there is zero chance Trump's team is letting this guy sit, tbf
Avatar
Yeah but Dave is reporting everybody like this. Somebody's gotta stop his dumb ass

It’s strange. I *know* that people in the US have much more extensive rights to free speech, but it’s still a hell of a trip to see someone doing something that carries a two to five year prison sentence in England and Wales.
Avatar
If that were a trial in England and Wales, you could get done for contempt of court for tweeting that lede!!
Avatar
Still, it's a nice change of pace because usually I'm all 'yes. It's terrible. We have very sharply limited speech rights here' to look at something and go 'yeah, that should be illegal'.
Avatar
We have to assume all jurors are in danger of retribution from Trump's deranged supporters, if he's convicted. It's just like a mafia trial, in that respect. Utterly crazy.
Avatar
I think even before that (and I accept it's *arguable* that jury selection doesn't count as part of proceedings, but I cannot imagine a case where if we had jury selection, UK lawmakers would not very quickyl legislate to say 'of course it counts'). Even without that, it traduces the process.
Avatar
I think it's incredibly optimistic to think they wouldn't be targeted before that.
Avatar
Seriously, why retaliate after a verdict when you can jury-tamper before?
Avatar
Agree w you. (American Eyeballs much?) This is a fairly sane, responsible discussion about the jury selection process and its protocols. www.wnyc.org/story/former...
Avatar
Holy cow. This came up AGAIN. They had seven jurors, then had to delete one because this: (screencap from Politico) www.politico.com/newsletters/...?
Avatar
Canada too. Most times you can’t report anything about the jury if there is one.
Avatar
A thing beaten into me to the extent I actually feel a little stressed about having replied to the post with the screengrab in it.

Kind of makes you wonder how the British Press would handle the criminal trial of a former prime minister
Avatar
If Jeffrey Donaldson ends up going to trial it’s going to be a major challenge for the media reporting on the trial.
Avatar
Just won't do a lot of it until after the fact - c.f. the Archer trial, for instance
Avatar
if it was Liz Truss, a lot of lettuce pictures. if it was Borisconi, endless fawning
Avatar
Avatar
doesn't this violate the judge's orders on secrecy or something?
Avatar
I mean, I agree that this doesn't need reporting like this and in this particular case the dangers are pretty high. OTOH it is a PUBLIC proceeding. If you were physically there in court, you'd be hearing all of this out loud.
Avatar
Yeah, but the thing with the type of online-to-IRL harassment the juror anonymity is meant to prevent is that it can be decreased with friction; the more steps the harasser has to take to figure out how to harass you, the less likely they are to actually do it. This dramatically decreased friction
Avatar
people like trump and that tiktok person have changed the information game akiva but the press are just the last to accept it
Avatar
Yep. It would be different if any of this were newsworthy. It isn't
Avatar
Judge should probably tell them not to state their employer, but only state the type of work they do. Would make it much harder to identify.
Avatar
Listing their actual place of employment is unconscionable.
Avatar
doesn’t sound like a bookstore 50 people work at either, know what I’m sayin’?
Avatar
Honestly there might be, it's large and well-known. But still, I suspect I could put a name to that person in under an hour with Internet research.
Avatar
There's another account I follow for a different subject matter than this, a woman who points out from time to time that it's actually not that hard for someone with the right tools or the right interest to geolocate a single photograph. And not just, like, if the Eiffel Tower is in the background.
Avatar
Attaching email addresses and Twitter handles to stories increased the amount of hate mail reporters get for example
Avatar
My Twitter account got linked in a Fox News story a few years ago, I got absolutely swamped with bullshit for weeks. And I'm a total nobody who said something uncomplimentary about a right-wing restaurant chain. God knows what shit these jurors are going to have to handle
Avatar
You might say that. I would say this information pretty much identifies the individual. If it came from a healthcare record (via a Covered Entity, natch; journalists do not have HIPAA duties to anyone) it would be a pretty clear HIPAA violation.

You sound like one of your coworkers. You know, the scary one.

a term I use a lot is the tyranny of efficiency: things that are bearable because you can't cram the entire world into that courtroom become unbearable at scale with the efficiency of digital transmission

wait. what? they do that? if i was on a jury, they would be like, "Jury #7 is a weird nerd who lives in [city]. She's single, is obsessed with the 1990 live action tv adaptation of Swamp Thing, here's a quick excerpt of her AO3 fanfic pornography"? to everyone?
Avatar
Well, most of the time, it'd be Q: Juror #7, do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work? A: I'm REALLY into the TV show Swamp Thing. The one from 1990. Q: Oh... kay. So, is there anything about Swamp Thing that would prevent you from fairly judging the evidence we'll present here in court?
Avatar
And trust me, no one in that courtroom wants to hear anyone's fanfic porn, of anything.

I'll let Dave write my dating profile but he needs to Be Cool About This
