1. "Teach the center left party a lesson" carries too high a short-term price. The bad guys work fast. 2. If not even New Zealand is safe from authoritarian undoing whatever good the center left has done, then there's nowhere to run. We have to stand and fight. 3. UK & France show that we can win.
I know the latest NZ election outcome was less than good, but jesus.

France and UK offer up some hope. Different systems, different cultures, but not so different they are unrecognizable; they are allies swimming in the same stream as us.

JUST IN: Polls closed in France. Exit polls show surprise: —Left coalition (New Popular Front) projected first. (!) —Far-right (RN) has lost its bid to take power. Anti-RN front appears to have worked very well. —No bloc close to majority. Follow this 🧵 for results and more:

I just saw some clip.of some tweet saying a cybertruck in general Lee colors was the coolest thing ever. No. That is not cool. That is super dorky. Jason Statham growing impatient with a tattoo artist while chain smoking and listening to The Replacements is cool.

So let's see, socially liberal, monarchy-skeptical, human rights lawyer, pro-BLM... the bloke seems okay with me. But what about SANDWICHES? What kind, when does he eat them, how does he eat them? This has brought down promising UK politicians in the past! I hope Labour chose wisely!
Who is Keir Starmer? A look at the man likely to become the next U.K. prime ministerwww.npr.org The U.K. is electing a new prime minister. Leading in the polls is a human rights lawyer and a knight who's rumored to have inspired a character in the Bridget Jones movies.

Every year on the 4th of July, I urge people to actually read the Declaration of Independence. I make that same suggestion today.

Tomorrow is the fourth. If America weren't great, we wouldn't care about keeping it. I love that our country is truly multiracial, all of us have "American" names, we care a lot less about class than other countries (in my work, this means lots of 1st gen students indistinguishable from the rest)

The law must protect but not bind a favored in-group, and bind but not protect a disfavored out-group. Therefore Title IX does not apply as interpreted by the Administration for only these select schools, because they have enrolled or employ members of the favored in-group. Choose Your Own Law!
NEWS: Judge John Broomes, a Trump appointee in Kansas, today blocked the Biden admin Title IX rule as to Alaska, Kansas, Utah, & Wyoming — but also any school nationwide where Young America's Foundation members or the kids of Moms for Liberty go. Opinion: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

I shall enjoy this too, but this may be the last year we get to do it.
And how will I be spending it? In the traditional patriotic American fashion: grilling and laughing at the English.

Just saw a claim that "For the better part of the American Revolution, General Washington’s Continental Army raised toasts to King George III, who they saw as their protector against a despotic parliament." I'm calling bullshit on it. Are there any citations for this to back up this claim?

Briefly considered writing a letter to Chief Justice Roberts. But not going to do it because it won't do any good. Instead, here's some help for you so that you can get it right should you see one of the Six out and about or in a lecture hall or something like that.

I mean, when you put it like that, yeah it sounds kind of bad.
The fact that I know more about Joe Biden’s one bad debate night than I do about Donald Trump’s years of raping and sexually assaulting girls within Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex trafficking ring shows exactly what is terribly wrong with today’s political mainstream media.

Sorry if this seems like I'm wallowing in despair. Think of it as a call to action, because we have one shot at this.
If the President may ignore the laws passed by Congress without fear of reprisal, of what use is Congress? If the courts protect the powerful and punish the weak, of what use are the courts? If the lawless are unconstrained by the law, of what use is the law?

I've been saying "run on abortion" for a while now. I'll say it again. Run on abortion. Look at Michigan. Look at Arizona. Abortion rights are popular and Trump and his Republicans are opposed to them.
Avatar
In case you all forgot, Trump sucked in that debate too, and not just from the overt authoritarianism. He couldn't answer a question and demonstrated a pathological aversion to truth and was named about pretending to be "moderate" on abortion despite his followers' preferences.
Avatar
In case you weren't scared enough of a Trump Presidency yet. Read the 22nd Amendment very closely. There is nothing in there that would stop Trump from running fir Vice-President in 2028 paired with Stoogy McCronieface, who would them immediately resign and VP Trump would accede to a third term.

Whether this be by way of absolute or qualified immunity will not matter. QI is already a massive fucking joke ("I couldn't have known it was wrong to truncheon a surrendering arrestee in the back of the head!") and will be the practical equivalent of absolute immunity: elevation above the law.
There is also every reason to think that this court will expand Trump v. U.S in his second term to extend immunity to those doing his bidding. I.e., “Our holding in Trump v. U.S. demands that government officials be able to enact the will of the executive without fear of criminal proceedings.”
Avatar
Acgreat deal of my calculations and assessments of what happens in politics held as a premise that while it would be practically challenging, a lawless President could be held to account. Despite a politicized Senate refusing to impeach, and despite terrible delay, the courts were getting to it.
