Fyi to journalists: Hillbilly Elegy is not about the brave nobility of rural poor/working class people. It’s deeply insulting to rural poor people - presenting them as lazy addicts who rely on welfare instead of working. The book is about how amazing Vance was to escape that backwards culture.

Lost in the ongoing Trumpapalooza is the excellent news that a malaria vaccination developed at Oxford Univ. over the last 30 years and costing only £3 per shot is being unrolled in malaria-prone countries. If it fulfills its promise, this will make an enormous difference to so many lives.

The most interesting thing to me about the current situation is my apathy to it. I was more interested in buying a baseball cap from a small town farmer's market yesterday than I was in the big news story of the day. I just. Don't. Care.

I just made myself happy imagining how pleased my maternal grandmother would be that part of my job is running circles around self-important, mediocre men. I really think it would bring a smile to Grandma's face that her granddaughter is embarrassing a bunch of dudes for a living.

My dad and I love watching recordings of sumo wrestling matches but could never watch them in person because we'd be the two gaijin escorted from the arena for hollerin' like rednecks.

Some advice after 25 years of work in Egypt/living in AL: 1) Liquid IV is best electrolyte/salt hydration drink (or Pedialyte) 2)If overheated, cool shower, then colder bath (slow temp decrease) 3) Freeze bottles of water. Put between legs (crotch)+ under armpits+ at neck. Will cool blood rapidly

Check on your people. Heat waves aren’t generally regarded as the most deadly of natural disasters but they often are.

This is my hobby-horse: Trump and his administration weren’t “incompetent”, they were _uninterested_ in conventional goals of governing. The things they were actually interested in (torturing immigrants, collecting bribes) they hit the ground running, executed repeatedly and iterated successfully.

I brought home this beautiful angel one year ago today. I don't know that I'll ever stop missing Lugosi, but Priscilla reminded me that love is not a finite resource. She helped me feel less guilty about dating again and made it possible for me to open myself up after loss. I owe her a lot.

Princess Priscilla wishes all of her subjects an auspicious Friday.
