Oh no I have started watching this and now I am obsessed. The sound is amazing — hoofsteps and zebras snorting and the sound of jackals lapping up water. Even the (subscriber-only) comment stream is wholesome
someone posted this earlier and it's AMAZING Live cam of a watering hole at a reserve in Nambia. I've watched zebras, wart hogs, oryx and other critters It's really active right now www.youtube.com/live/ydYDqZQ...

This video is by far the best discussion I've seen about the horrific bullying campaign against Imane Khelif, a boxer who was "transvestigated" by monsters like JK Rowling, JD Vance and Elon Musk. They drive home a point everyone needs to get: No one is safe. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yicz...

Last spring, Washington state passed a bill banning commercial octopus farming. Today, we (myself and 99 others, led by Jennifer Jacquet, Becca Franks, Peter Godfrey-Smith, and Walter Sanchez-Suarez) have a letter in Science supporting the US OCTOPUS Act, which would do the same nationwide.

This is a corner of anthropometric design failure I didn’t know about. Might have to talk about it in Human Factors this term.
The hidden sexism of much of the puppetry world is built around the fact that Jim Henson was 6'2". Sets were literally built to him. So puppeteers who were 6' didn't have to compensate during auditions and did better. Martin P. Robinson, Muppeteer, built the original Audrey IIs.

Big online reactionaries having a flipping-out contest over Tim Walz not liking spicy food underlines something I tried to get at in this post, which is that the economics of their politics, even at the elected level, is pure Content Creator Shit. The thing is, once somebody proposes restricting the freedom of women to travel from one state to another, we actually don’t have to care about their ideas about marginal tax brackets or international trade or whatever

The Miami Herald today puts a story about former UF president Ben Sasse's spending written by a student journalist from UF on its front page. Not a rewrite by a staffer, but the work the Alligator first published. Excellent recognition of powerful student journalism:

I wrote a new one for The Guardian: “Heterodox” thinkers have gotten both more right wing and more cynical and conspiratorial about the political system. Will the young men following them in droves vote Republican or just stay home? www.theguardian.com/us-news/arti...
The heterodoxy: are ‘free thinkers’ like Joe Rogan driving young men to the right – or just confusing them?www.theguardian.com Brash, charismatic figures from Russell Brand to Sneako have seduced a disillusioned demographic. Will they turn to Donald Trump in November?

one reason i’d like to see an unapologetically pro-union civil war epic is that i think modern audiences still have a hard time with the idea that people could have genuinely hated slavery even if they weren’t racial egalitarians

a big loss for the incompetent moron community but we will persevere

would love to see a civil war movie that centered around the experiences of northern soldiers as they got their first real glance at slavery in practice and came away from it fanatical abolitionists

it is a testament to the crushing propaganda victory of confederate apologists in the early 20th century that we have exactly one civil war epic that takes the union’s view of the conflict

26 years ago, two years after the introduction of effective HIV treatment, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s lesbian and gay community newspaper, ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline. It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.

I may be mistaken but I have a funny feeling that many of the same people who love invoking the Sokal affair to poke fun at humanities somehow do also unquestioningly endorse the automated bullshit generating machine 🤔 It's almost as if it wasn't about bullshit in the first place, huh.

Taylorism is a management philosophy based on using scientific optimization to maximize labor productivity and economic efficiency. Here's the result of making the false Taylorist assumption that the output of scientific research is scientific papers—the more, faster, and cheaper, the better.

Did you know postdocs at Brown unionized and are currently negotiating our first contract? Did you also know that the University is CHOOSING to withhold our raises because of the negotiations (even though they don't have to)? Read more about it in the Chronicle: www.chronicle.com/blogs/letter...
Postdoc Minimum Salaries at Brown Are Unacceptablewww.chronicle.com The university’s claim that salaries must be frozen during contract negotiations is dismaying.
