Artificial intelligence is automating the creation of fake news, spurring an explosion of web content mimicking factual articles that instead disseminate false information about elections, wars and natural disasters.

WaPo cut ~150 news jobs this year (plus ~120 on the business side): ALL local columnists, the entire social issues team, and education reporting. The 3rd richest person on the planet owns you, and if he had a problem with either "AI" or the total destruction of the news, things would look different.

who, other than literally everyone who has ever thought about this topic for more than three seconds and does not stand to be personally enriched by it, could possibly have predicted?
Avatar
Dear WaPo, go fuck yourselves. You and your NYC/DC brethren have introduced so much bullshit & inaccuracy into the public discourse that it's absurd for you to be raising this issue.

I feel like a lot of "newspapers" aren't news. They're written with a propaganda spin. AI or not.

As newspapers had trouble attracting younger subscribers, they pandered more-and-more to out-of-touch old white people insulated from the real economy.

There's a lot of institutions who are "all in" on the investment that boomers will never die.

I'm always extremely surprised businesses will take short term profits, every time, even when they are aware and informed it will mean long term losses. "You can have a dollar today and owe 100 tomorrow, or you can have $200 tomorrow no strings." "TODAY."
Avatar
Newspapers have always included propaganda and salacious speculations. The owners control the narrative and dictate the content. To know to what degree this holds true is to know the intent of the person behind the curtain pulling the strings.

What are some of the specific inaccuracies and bullshit you're referring to?

What do you think Steve Bannon meant when he said “flood the zone with shit?”

What are the top six historical events (from a US perspective) since the end of the Cold War?

Name the most populous U.S. city that starts with the letter F.

My point was going to be that I can pick from a number of major historical events to demonstrate bullshit & inaccuracies laundered into the public discourse by capitalist media. But, I suspect you of sea lining, so the conversation is over.

You seemed super angry about WaPo in particular, so I was curious about what instances you were angry about. You responded with a homework assignment I didn't feel like doing.

We won’t need AI to weaponize machine robot armies….misinformation is making us so angry we are ripping each other apart

For most of the world, misinformation is running ahead of famine, and dragging Pestilence along with them.
Maybe firing a large percentage of your human reporters is contributing to the problem? Nah, totally unrelated, for sure.

AI usage shld be exclusively and only for areas it's actually needed: analysing huge data sets and NOT HUMAN INTERACTION Why the hell is everyone pretending this is a done deal?! People aren't walking around with succinylcholine in their bags, they can't buy uranium in the supermarket. Regulate AI!
Avatar
Analyzing huge data sets, monitoring population for political dissent, and suppressing views that do not align with the state, yeah....
Sign the contract with your workers. Its Christmas Scrooge. One more shovel of coal for the fire please sir.

Yep, didn’t see that coming. Between unregulated social media, news agencies that spread misinformation and disinformation, and the irresponsible use of A.I. Our democracy is in serious danger.
Avatar
Good thing the WaPo has a large staff of actual human writers and editors who can sort that stuff out, right.....?
Avatar
Gee, I wonder who could have predicted that?
Avatar
Ah, now AI is coming for their jobs, they have noticed automation is not always a good thing.
Avatar
You guys write some real shit, too.
Avatar
Well duh The smartest thing older media could do is dump most opinion columnists, explainer articles, and bylines.
Avatar
no way, if only there was some way we could have known in advance
Avatar
Cool. So I was right not to trust anyone

Avatar
Wonder why it’s getting disseminated? It’s not like major news outlets are, ya know, unironically calling this “intelligence.”
Avatar
This and AI generated internet friends that persuade you is exactly what I would do if I ever decided to be evil.
Avatar
What we need is a lot of articles about how election results and scientific research are accurate and correct to balance out the opposite nonsense. Or just stop letting AI do all of the things that it's currently doing.
Avatar
That’s the future of the press, as they can’t stop themselves fr being sold to billionaire fascists and cleptocrats and so will follow suit
