I’ve said this before, but it’s timely again. Dear writers: 1. Read contracts carefully. 2. Don’t know what something means? Ask. 3. You can add clauses to your contract. “No AI covers” and “All rights revert to the author after four weeks without communication” are great ones.

It’s so cool that cities are like “pweeease only turn your AC on if you’re actively dying and don’t go below 79 🥺🤘🏻💗” while the AI nobody asked for is slurping up the power grid to make 1 image of a girl with 5 tits

Remember that to the tech elite: 1) art is merely content 2) creativity is worthless 3) AI systems should be allowed to steal from every writer and artist to make the tech companies even richer.
OpenAI CTO Mira Murati: “Some creative jobs maybe will go away, but maybe they shouldn't have been there in the first place if the content that comes out of it is not very high quality.”

HISTORICAL NARRATOR VOICE - “The next logical step was to replace the pollsters themselves with ‘AI,’ which led to the election in 2032 of President Boaty McBoatface (actually three orcas in a trench coat), and the beginning of the Three Day War (still ongoing).”
Pollsters are simulating political surveys with AI because nobody answers the phone: ash.harvard.edu/articles/usi... "The big difference between humans and AI agents is that the AI agents always pick up the phone..."

This fits well with the studies that came out early this year that repeated vaccination reduces the chances of Long Covid www.scientificamerican.com/article/vacc...
People who were repeatedly vaccinated for COVID-19 — initially receiving shots aimed at the original variant, followed by boosters and updated vaccines targeting variants — generated antibodies capable of neutralizing a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 variants and even some distantly related coronaviruses.
Repeat COVID-19 vaccinations elicit antibodies that neutralize variants, other viruses | Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louismedicine.wustl.edu Response to updated vaccine is shaped by earlier vaccines yet generates broadly neutralizing antibodies

One time I was being kind of a whiney smart ass about writing and Ted Chiang turned to me and quoted this verbatim. I write it down in my daybook anew about this time every year, as I finish my story for the Sycamore Hill workshop (which starts Saturday so why am I on social media?)

"Why do LGBTQIA+ people love superheroes so much?"
Oh, you mean why queer people might be drawn to stories where the protagonist leads two separate lives, one far more colorful and exciting than the other, but has to keep the life where they are their true self a secret from their friends and family for fear of judgement and reprisals? No idea.

This should go without saying, but: PUBLISHERS SHOULD NOT ADVERTISE PAID EDITING SERVICES IN THEIR REJECTION LETTERS Rejection letters are necessary, because publishers receive more submissions than they could possibly publish. FFS have some basic respect for people submitting.

people will share all sorts of different tips and tricks for how to season your keyboard. i can tell you the method that works for me: eat some potato chips right before you start typing. over time your keyboard will take on a natural sheen that will make your writing deeper and more complex

This, but also, not everyone can tolerate being bad at something for long enough to develop skill. Tolerance for failure is an underappreciated requirement for getting good at something.
I think, if you never sat down to learn the skills of a particular art, that art seems mysterious to you and it's easier to think that someone with those skills must just have "talent" cause you can't imagine yourself being able to do those things. Like, a long time ago on an online writing workshop

It's actually quite empowering to realize that the "one weird trick" to getting good at something is to put in the time. It removes the concept that you have to be somehow preordained to do it. The hardest part for people is the patience necessary to suck for a while before things start to click

That thing about getting ideas into sentences being cognitive load... that is literally what writing *is*. And you don't *have* ideas, in a very real sense, until you've turned them into sentences yourself. There's a reason copyright law insists on a fixed form, not just an idea.

From the DuckDuckGo home page, click on the three lines in the upper right. Go to "Settings". Choose the "AI Features" button near the top right. Turn all that shit off.
Well, it was nice while it lasted. I've been using DuckDuckGo as an alternative to Google for years and saw today that they're integrating AI into their searches. It sucks out here.

I want to be able to take apart laptops with screwdrivers so I can make repairs and upgrades myself. I hate that all the computers less than 10 years old are held together with fucking GLUE and designed so if you try anything DIY on it you’re immediately gonna break it forever.

Once again reminding people that if you're ever feeling overwhelmed by everything that is going on in the world and all of the bad news, it really helps to focus on the little things you can control rather than what you can't. Making small, positive changes is better than feeling paralysed.
