In recognition of the first Monday after the halfway mark of 2024 (July 2), here's a screenshot of one of my most popular posts from The Bad Place, posted on Oct. 5, 2020. May your Monday be slightly less harrowing than the end-Cretaceous mass-extinction event. 🦖🦕

Curious how France is described as political chaos because two parties with ≈60% of the seats in Parliament will negotiate a PM, whereas Netanyahu is always described as the will of the Israeli people, rather than the negotiated choice among eight parties with 53% of the seats.
Honestly, what kind of bananas frame this story like this? Is shit serious or not, fucken freaks?

Maybe it's time that the @nytimes.com should step aside for a younger, fitter, more coherent newspaper.

Have we considered an embargo on the legal academy?
That awful blitz primary scheme is the work of a law professor and a venture capitalist. You can read the reports here. Da fuq? If there weren't a ton of money behind this, would anybody take it seriously at all? And it's just one person! www.semafor.com/article/07/0...

alternatively, do not read ezra
Read Ezra Klein's latest on a "mini-primary" to replace Biden. It's not as terrible as many of his colleagues' takes, but 2 notes: 1: He takes as given that Biden is incapacitated. Maybe so; but Klein's MD is not in evidence. 2: It ignores the huge practical obstacles to anyone but Harris...1/

It’s probably a coincidence that the “two plus two” cybermobbing of Black math scholars happened during this same period
It's possible that we wouldn't know who Chris Rufo is if it weren't for Russ Vought turning his BS propaganda campaign against "critical race theory" into a (short-lived), top-priority piece of the Trump administration's agenda in its dying days. It was their response to the George Floyd protests.

Hate it when non-philosophers criticise a particular philosopher for their obscurity and dullness. I mean, they’re normally right, but you have to study for years before you’re entitled to say so.

How fitting - John Henry Newman "came to see Evangelicalism, with its emphasis on religious feeling and on the Reformation doctrine of justification by faith alone, as a Trojan horse for an undogmatic religious individualism that ignored the Church's role in the transmission of revealed truth [...]"
Here it is, the dumbest thing you will read today www.nytimes.com/2024/07/04/o...

Cheer up, Tories. Canada's Tories were reduced to 2 seats in the 90s, and they weren't even cartoon villains.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.
