I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

As a side note, this is John McEntee, Trump's Director of White House Personnel and the primary architect of Project 2025. On Tik Tok he said he gives counterfeit bills to homeless people so they will be arrested when they go to spend them.

This is marvelous. Class action alleges Walmart systematically puts one price on the shelf, and charges a little more at the cash register. Walmart claims consumers can see the prices actually charged, so no harm. CA7 rejects. www.law360.com/securities/a...

I have the opposite read: Trump, Le Pen, et al. happen when times are relatively good. When people are well off. When many don’t care about a functional government because they got theirs. Sprinkle in a threat of the status quo flipping and they’ll go fash

Kind of wild how Republicans being in every way worse than Democrats has caused many of us to create a literal double standard where they ignore evil by Republicans, from whom they expect it, but not from Democrats, who are expected to be better, and then decide they're the same so why bother voting

he gave his followers permission to indulge all their worst impulses loudly and in public this explains both the depth of their devotion to him and the way in which he was uniquely destructive to American society above and beyond the horrific policies he implemented
I strongly believe that the Trump era ushered in a truly horrific era of general ethical backsliding and nihilism in the US across all fronts, one that we still can’t even entirely wrap our brains around. (And Trump’s grotesquely evil approach to Covid made it even worse).

Importing this @volts.wtf thread from the bad place. It opens with a link to a piece that used official data to establish that yes, crime rates are indeed very much down recently. But here’s the thing, Project 2025’s Trump 2.0 promises to destroy that world in which we can “know” things like this.

Anyway I now have to finish writing this and read it this weekend, newsletter probably Monday, episodes Wednesday and Friday. The parasitic, nihilistic financial poison killing the tech industry and large parts of other businesses - The Shareholder Supremacy
Every time I make a connection like this I love it but I also feel like I'm in Hell. All of these poisonous business worms crawl in the dirt together

There's two kinds of RETVRN guys: the kind who think they love the way things used to be, but have no idea, & the guys who know exactly what it was like & they want it back. I wish we would broadcast more raw honesty from people who lived the worst of it while we still have the privilege

The reason the Louisiana Republicans don't care that any given version of the Ten Commandments is necessarily sectarian is that for their purposes, it's not the *content* of the text that's important. They want "The 10 Commandments" in schools as a symbol, as a wedge, not as a guide for morality.
Oh my God, I didn't realize this is literally the exact story I told in ONE NATION UNDER GOD. The Fraternal Order of Eagles was instrumental in spreading these Ten Commandments monuments across America in the 1950s ... as part of a promotional tour with the Cecil B. DeMille epic.

The takeaway from this piece is that (a) Trump is drawing people to white evangelical Christianity, even as most religions lose adherents, but (b) for most of the newly converted, Donald Trump is more central to their faith than Jesus Christ. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Some reduce the 2024 campaign to a contest between two old men, but it's a choice of two slates of federal appointees who'll impact your life in a million ways. Biden has staffed executive agencies with excellent choices who are doing good work. Trump will empower an army of Stephen Millers.
Under current law, you really couldn’t do much better than Biden’s FTC and NRLB. New Deal shit.

I second this recommendation. But where Moynihan uses the Jacobin Terror as a comparison point, I'd argue there's one that's more contemporary & also American. That's the "Christian Patriots" of the Posse Comitatus, who threatened to “lock up” DAs & judges they decided had violated the Constitution.

the recently launched ftc and doj investigations into retail and grocery stores over price gouging probably played a bigger in them lowering prices than lower sales imo
It was never inflation. They got greedy and people started stealing to survive. Walmart, Kroger, and others also did the same and saw increased shrink and decreased sales. Basic fuckin maths here.
Target to lower prices on thousands of basic items as inflation sends customers scrounging for dealsapnews.com The price cuts, already applied to 1,500 items, will eventually include 5,000 food, drink and essential household goods.

There were so many guys like Thomas and Alito at the Uniontown Country Club of my youth: ptit bourgeois alcoholic tyrants nonetheless perpetually paralyzed into staring vacantly down at their 5-finger gimlets while their much crazier wives accused the waiter of poisoning the French onion soup.
