The recent news from Massachusetts revenue officials that they collected about $1.8 billion this year from the so-called "millionaires tax" sparked chatter: Is the windfall great financial news — or a precursor to an exodus of wealthy residents?
Other states eye Mass. millionaires tax — for windfall or wealth exoduswww.wbur.org States considering wealth tax proposals, like Pennsylvania and Vermont, are taking note of Massachusetts' revenue gains. But at home, the question of whether the voter-approved Fair Share Amendment is...

how is this a “windfall” when it’s the revenue from a planned tax? “revenue that exceeds forecast to some extent” is not a “windfall”

Years of planning, coalition building, multiple signature gathering campaigns, and amending John Adams’ own state constitution. It wasn’t like your uncle, the Monopoly man passed away or something.

such an odd choice of framing!

It's acceptable to lose the millionaires. They drive up the cost of living for everyone. That's the whole reason inequality is bad

Rich assholes aren't going to move

They will, however, complain ad nauseam.

Easy solution to the millionaires moving... everywhere else should see the success and implement the same.

Exactly. After all, the millionaires have already been moving jobs overseas for decades to get around having to pay American workers a fair share of their labor. So who cares, let’s implement the tax everywhere then let them try to justify moving everything to China, Russia, or India.

What if the good thing that is happening as a direct result of a policy change is ACTUALLY going to lead to some nebulous, scary-sounding BAD thing that isn't happening and in fact has never happened? What then?!?!?
Avatar
So do you ask the millionaires what the headline should say, or do you just obey in advance when you write this nonsense?
Avatar
"Wealthy people didn't move out and just paid the tax, but what this article's dishonest framing presupposes is... what if we just reported the right-wing narrative instead of the facts?"
Avatar
A good, popular policy has a great outcome. But what if it's actually bad because some rich assholes said so?

Why're you licking millionaire taints?

The statement that Pagliuca changed his residency to Florida but still spends much of his time in Massachusetts begs the question: does he qualify for part-time residency, and is part-time residency subject to the millionaires tax?
Avatar
great financial news hope this helps

Great financial news. It’s already working

Massachusetts taxed wealthy people and the sky didn’t fall in. But what if it had fallen in?
Avatar
Solution: implement the tax everywhere so the wealthy can't escape their obligations to society.
Avatar
Sounds like a win either way, TBH.

Media: "Let's see the lefties tax these millionaires when they decide to leave the city THIS time!" Millionaires: *pay the tax and stay* Media: "Ah, well, nevertheless..."

itd be great if rich people left but if not the tax revenue is nice

Most of the states that have the highest tax on millionaires are among the ones with the most millionaires per capita. So, no. There will not be an “exodus.” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... www.nasdaq.com/articles/tax...

Oh please. Who the heck is going to leave MA? A BROOM CLOSET on the coast STARTS at 800K, and it's right next to the salt marsh, where it's all greenheads and rotten eggs. Rich people DO NOT FEEL TAXES. They're rich enough to loophole them to death anyway, so jack them up 200% with impunity.
Avatar
What’s the theory? They’re just now finding out about it? Accountants dropped the ball last year?
Avatar
Fix your shitty article.
Even when "all the wealthy people will domicile in other states to avoid the tax!" proves empirically to be false by passing the tax and observing what happens afterwards, they still are like "what if it's true tho"

They sell their property to ... other millionaires?
Avatar
Stop believing these parasites when they threaten to take their ball and go home. It's always bluster.
Avatar
Massachusetts gets $1.8 billion of its purloined money returned to the people, plus the parasites decamp for someplace else? Let me rewrite that for you: "The windfall is great financial news—AND a precursor to an exodus of wealthy residents."
Avatar
Avatar
We literally have the answer to that: they stayed and paid the tax

"Boston's NPR." Something tells me you don't mean for this to be as honest as it is, in 2024.

The former. The latter is idiotic
