A Republican congressman sharing a video posted by Richard Hainania of an Ole Miss counter protester making monkey noises at a black protester.
And here’s a Republican congressman endorsing the racism.

He's caught in a still photo from the scene that I saw yesterday, visible in the background between the protester and the person she's speaking to. From The Daily Mississippian's coverage, photo credits to Maria Ramirez and Antonella Rescigno. thedmonline.com/may-2nd-pro-...

In case anyone had any doubts about who exactly was showing up as “counter protesters” at Ole Miss:

Those Drumpf 2020 flags are all over porches and front yards here in southern Iowa, too.

To be fair, they don't even know what century it is.

Oh yeah, absolutely. The counter-protestors didn't say anything about Israel. I saw one pro-Israel t-shirt. They didn't say much about Gaza or Palestine. Their only political messages were "We want Trump", "Fuck Joe Biden", and "USA". The rest of the message was all just "We hate the protestors."
Avatar
They're *very* concerned about antisemitism in public spaces

These losers still waving around their loser candidate’s flag from the election he lost
Avatar
Still waving the flag from the war they lost, too.

I was really surprised I didn't see one here..

I'm kind of wondering if and who other than the counter "protests" is funding these efforts. Given that campus disorder is thought to benefit Republicans, I am going, "Hmmmmmm."

Tom, the protests were held a block off of Frat Row. My best guess: these were bored frat boys who went out for a round of hippie punching. There were absolutely no signs of organization at all from the counter-protestors.

Muh dude… You understand how that’s not any better, right?

Can never find that @jbouie.bsky.social post when I need it, so I'll paraphrase: Don't mistake describing something with advocating for it.

In this case I think it's just pure "showing who's boss" and "we don't do that shit around here".

Biden’s economy is soooooo bad they can’t even afford a Trump 2024 banner.

They always have those shit-eating grins. Reminds me of those kids doing the "tomahawk chop" couple years back.

Hey look, they brought firestarter. Except it's guaranteed toxic to burn that crap. Oh well, not toxic to use them as combustible material

The matching Trump Tain flag overalls kind of gave them away. Along with Tate Reeves celebrating them. bsky.app/profile/kagr...

Tate Reeves is up there with Tom Cotton for "Name that sounds like it was made up as a stand-in for a specific kind of racist"
Avatar
thedmonline.com/may-2nd-pro-... This behavior does not represent American values. We must do better.

Well, all the #ProudBoys are on duty because of the protests

I'm afraid, these guys are just waiting for moments like a gathering, a protest , to call it a riot. No matter which side it starts from .

Haven't seen any audio/video evidence of what these two were doing, but given the context, I'd guess they were mocking the famine conditions in Gaza.

These are the mediocre white males "anxious" about their unjust, ill-gotten, yet traditional hegemony ebbing away toward people superior to them in just about every measurable way. Well, these are their children, still in the ivory tower, jeering like so many yapping dogs behind a protective fence.

Now remember cancel culture is bad, when we look at this picture our first concern should be about whether our reaction will deter other bros from making monkey noises at black people
Avatar
we also don't want to deter others like him who clearly are deeply concerned about antisemitism
Avatar
And student safety in general.
Avatar
The universal “I’m upset about antisemitism” expression.

They really should blur that young man’s face. It would be unfair if just one poor decision could make him lose his summer internship at McKinsey so he ends up working at one of his father’s 6 automobile dealerships, and publishing photographic evidence of his actions seems so unnecessarily punitive

Judge Kyle Duncan has a clerkship that just opened up.

I think we should celebrate these people's self-expression, we should make every effort to ensure that they are individually and persistently credited for their contribution to this public debate, we should ensure them recognition for their ideas wherever they go, throughout their later careers.
Avatar
These are just kids whose whole lives are in front of them and shouldn't be judged on a single moment. Also, the protestors should be kicked out of school, rounded up with force by the state, be named, and potential employers should be given a heads up about their violent tendencies.

I'm sure legislation is forthcoming
