And it’ll be the exact same pundits who are demanding the Democrats replace Biden who’ll criticize them as soon as they do.
So let’s say the Dems replace Biden on the ticket. Press unleashes 3 months of “Dems in Disarray” stories and the replacement candidate gets no traction. Democracy ends.

and when a bunch of states start taking the replacement off the ballot and it ends up in the courts? The idea that just throwing out the elected nominee is normal and easy is the nuttiest part of all of this.

I love that show, but everyone knows the last few seasons are garbage 😂. On a serious note, the age thing reminds me of the e-mail stuff with Hillary. They are both stories, but media sees it as the issue where they can prove their version of fairness. Part of a permission structure.

The last few seasons, aka “after Aaron Sorkin went to rehab”. Further support for my theory that some people should just be allowed to do cocaine.

I hate it when people don't recognize fantasy when they see it. WW was a very pleasant show set in utopia.
Avatar
In the Sorkinverse, Biden's opening statement in the next debate is an offer to step down as the nominee if Trump also does, Trump takes him up on the deal, and they walk off stage hand in hand
Avatar
Hey, I'm a transplant who watched that show twice and even *I* know that's not how stuff works!
Avatar
West Wing was like the debates: politics-themed entertainment.

If you mean the people who actually worked in the west wing, then yea. I might have missed it, but have you stated why the people wanting to make a change are wrong? I’m asking because I respect your opinion much more than most I see poopooing “the pundits” (aka Democrats with eyeballs).
Avatar
Maybe also because it *would* fly with the GOP. Rallying behind whoever is their signature move.
Avatar
Of course! Only one party is supposed to save democracy, follow norms, etc etc etc.
Avatar
Like I said earlier, the game political pundits are playing right now is a really obvious one but some ppl have let their anxieties work themselves up into such a panic that they’re diving head first into helping them play it anyways
Avatar
I admit I panicked. But not nearly as much as the Huffpo front page shows panic.
Avatar
I feel like a lot of pundits and journos have just been waiting for something, anything 'big' to happen so they could pounce. JFC, it was one debate. and now they are wish casting a 'solution'
Avatar
My hunch is that the media was hoping for lots of juicy sensational drama and sound bites in the debate that they could milk for weeks afterward, and when it was just “meh” they had to come up with something else to yammer about, and this is what they came up with
Avatar
Maybe, but I think a lot of it is that they want Trump back. Either for the clicks and ratings or because they want fascism. But there's no way to make a reasonable sounding case for Trump, so they're hammering Biden about his age in hopes of depressing Dem turnout and sowing discord.
Avatar
And it's working because everyone is so addicted to fighting online.
Avatar
and they keep ignoring the elephant in the room someone should do an analysis of this 'feeding frenzy' and what the hell is driving it. it does not seem at all organic
Avatar
all the people insisting Biden drop out are the ones with the least to lose and most to gain in a Trump admin. Not gonna lose their cushy pundit jobs - if anything they'll get more gigs as Trump guides the wrecking ball. It's in their own (& employers) best interest that Trump wins 🤡

Pundits: Biden must step aside. Dems force Biden to step down and is replaced by Harris. Pundits: No not like that.

I feel like when people like Robert Kuttner and Brian Buetler are aping MattY & Ezra Klein, you need to do a good Swedish Death Clean on your so-called pundits. You know dopes by the company they keep.

It's not about sense, it's about your take getting the most hits

They will criticize lack of experience in foreign policy (governors) or executive branch (senator/representative) or just in general (anyone under 65).

Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Let's stick with Biden and win in November.

It'll be exactly as @msignorile.bsky.social warned yesterday:
Don't fall for the trap. If Democrats listen to the New York Times and try to replace Biden, the New York Times will have a new narrative: Democrats in chaos. And they will then have 347 stories a week about whoever is the candidate, all focused on how inexperienced and unprepared that person is.
Avatar
Pretty much. All they seem to care about is the best headline to get max clicks and they convince themselves that's journalistic integrity.
Avatar
But...but...we have a surplus of "this is the week Donald Trump became president" articles to publish!
Avatar
And those same pundits will relish it, whether they realize it or not. What they want is not an election that puts forth the best candidate for the country, but absolute drama in the moment. That's one reason Trump is anywhere near a viable candidate for them: because he provides drama in spades.
Avatar
And that is the god damn truth!
Avatar
NYT later in the race: No, that's not who we meant...
Avatar
The punditocracy values glibness above all else. They don't realize that most of us don't. We might value honesty more. Or authenticity. Or kindness. Humility. Biden values.
But that's the game that they want in place.
Avatar
As I've been saying, if Biden is so bad, why aren't ppl asking him ti resign now as president and to not just run? Why are ppl ok with 6 mos of him in this condition? Also, if it's hard now about whether to drop out, why do ppl think it would be easier IDing a replacement?
Avatar
Argument could be made that if you allow Biden to remain the outcome would be the same. I’m in favor of replacing him.

This situation is making me crazy. President Biden, an acknowledged stutterer (?) became overwhelmed by the insanity that Trump exudes. Combined with the lack of fact checking, it is no wonder that Joe fell into the "Oh, God, will this never end?" and found himself arguing about golf handicaps.
Avatar
I'm still mad about Al Franken and Andrew Cuomo, so this just piles on.

I just want the Dems to run whomever can defeat tRump and I don't have a clue who that might be.
