intimidating and punishing journalists who expose flagrant state corruption, another classic Jim Crow mechanism

Exactly this.
Billionaires have spent a lot of money on purchasing and consolidating our mass media, they have been nakedly pushing for a kleptocracy for decades. No person who ever says the words, "Tax the rich." will ever have their backing

In the same week John Roberts' corrupt court told us that 'it's not a bribe if the public official is given the money AFTER they've done the official action on behalf of a person or entity. It's merely a tip.'
I keep on thinking about how John Roberts messed up nitrogen oxide with nitrous oxide in a ruling on how the courts were better suited to provide expertise than experts.

Jamie Raskin points this out all the time, and I just read 4000 pages of discourse about the Constitution and can confirm: Congress is outlined first because it’s supposed to be first. Everything flows from Congress.
I think one of the really under-appreciated things in the US is how much SCOTUS' statutory interpretation decisions are damaging--and they are--but almost exclusively because of /Congress/ being a failed institution.

As a Black double graduate of Mr. Jefferson’s university, I’ll say this: no one can “cancel” the man. He’s on our currency and carved in statuary. Acknowledging the chasm between TJ’s words and deeds isn’t “cancelling”; it’s being an adult who can love this country without relying on fairytales.

On this I 100% disagree, mostly because "national service" /= "military service" The Netherlands system: 2-years national service required if a civil occupation, 1 year national service if military. America could really make good use of 100,000 youthful foresters right now, for example.
Mandatory national service is a bad idea (that in addition to being bad on the merits would be hideously unpopular) and I can't believe any left of center person is contemplating supporting any version of it in the United States

It's a hell of a lot easier--and safer--to punch your allies than your mutual enemies. Leftists who attack liberals are mostly performative chickenshits, in my experience. They slap whomever they view as weakest or least likely to hit back instead of those who are actively doing harm.

Money is like shit. If we spread it around, it functions as fertilizer, enabling incredible ideas to sprout and grow. If instead we just pile it up into mountains, it stinks and all the great stuff that could sprout and flourish is starved of nutrients. Universal basic income is the good shit.

Last year this time we were learning about a billionaire Nazi memorabilia enthusiast buying the house belonging to Clarence Thomas’s mom and paying for his nephew to attend a $60k per year private school, but we’re supposed to be worried that Beyoncé will have undue influence.
She disclosed a valuable gift that makes perfect sense for her to receive and somehow this is a problem when last week we got reporting that Trump literally asked for a billion dollar bribe to hollow out environmental regulations. Ok.

When they open their mouths, Elon constantly proves he has no idea what he bought. Jack constantly proves he has no idea what he built.
The only reason people think Elon is the dumbest rich guy is because Jack actually manages to keep his mouth shut half the time But when he opens it…

I have to imagine that the opportunity to arrest a bunch of NYU professors at a protest is like getting to play in the Super Bowl for the NYPD. Huge moment for an institution that had until recently struggled to find a way to make a terrible moment worse.

Meta and its employees absolutely, fundamentally believe that everyone else is very, very stupid. This has been a core theme of how they’ve functioned since the start.
Meta says “a bug” caused them to rapidly, throughout the entire Meta network, block every website that contained a link to an article about their suppression of climate change ads and posts. That’s one hell of a specific bug.

Today in "Twitter is over" news: A PR person for Lucid, one of Tesla's most direct competitors, just had a "platform manipulator" label put on his X.com account for (get this) refuting a fake internal email from Lucid's CEO that Musk fans and stock pumpers were circulating.

If you define people by their sexuality and define sexuality as obscene, then you get away with defining people - by their very existence - as "obscene." Fundamentalists use "children!😱" so we won't see the card they palmed.
just to be clear: this is unambiguously illegal. absolutely no doubt about it. illegal in every state.

Not covid. Any vaccine. This is how you create new, vaccine-resistant strains of long-defeated viruses. It’s a path to mass unnecessary death. Just profoundly stupid, unfathomably dangerous garbage. And it’s about to be the position of the Republican Party.
Thank you to everyone for your responses and, in particular to @mizzelle.bsky.social for sending the Youtube link to the Richmond speech. The link below starts right when Trump promises that he will ban all federal funding to any school that has any vaccine mandates. Measles, anyone?

Yes, if for a single second you think it is acceptable to let Republicans have power at any level for any amount of time, look into the pending bills in state legislatures that would ban pornography and contraceptives, rescind child labor laws, and mandate genital examinations at elementary schools.
There are like 300 insane state laws that the far right is trying to pass right now IF YOU ARE A BORED PUNDIT PLEASE EMAIL ME

"atonement" is action, not words.
It’s low key disturbing that the Times described Elon Musk as engaging in a process of “atonement” without including a single voice stating that using the death camp where more than a million Jews were murdered to promote your advertising business is offensive.
