The white supremacist gunman who murdered 23 people going about their day in El Paso five years ago next month had been obsessed with an alleged “Hispanic invasion” of Texas. There is no pivot, or softening. This is the Trump Republican Party. They keep telling us who they are, so believe them.

Lake also warned of the "Bidvaion" reference to the replacement theory that smashes the claim that Biden is intentionally facilitating a literal "invasion" of the United States, before leading the crowd in the nativist "build the wall" chant.

One reason they will never disavow Charlottesville is that "You will not replace us!" has become their whole thing.

RNC night two is the replacement theory addition. So far, multiple Senate candidates have used their minutes on stage to promote the white nationalist replacement theory, which has inspired multiple deadly terrorist attacks and is a lie that actively threatens American democracy.

Psst: Project 2025 is terrifying for a lot of reasons but also because on page 5 it calls for teachers and librarians who grant access to books that are maligned as pornography (which just means anything LGBTQ) to be registered as sex offenders. Pass it on.

I was just thinking about how Obama had the PUMAs to contend with heading into his 2008 convention, Clinton had Bernie or Bust in 2016, and now Biden has this sort of cross-cutting rebellion that elected progressives have decided not to join.

I knew having AOC, Bernie and other progressives demonstrate they have his back would pay dividends but I didn't think it would happen so quickly

Good ideas, but very hard to implement. One requires a constitutional amendment, and the other requires enforcement mechanisms which SCOTUS can just simply ignore.

Ideally, political parties would have norms and procedures for this stuff, even for exceptional circumstances. US political parties most definitely do not. So it's gonna be sloppy. The good news about stuff like this is if Biden does leave no one will care, and also if he stays? No one will care.

I am but a random internet person, but I feel like this is a conversation for the party to have had intensively and privately two weeks ago, resolved by now, and to definitely, definitely not have in front of donors

Mostly agree except on reflection I feel like the three-day combo of the shooting, the Cannon decision, and the Vance pick was a powerful reminder of how miserable and exhausting it was to live with one goddamn thing after another when this guy had the spotlight for four straight years

I think Trump getting shot and being photographed with a defiant fist in the air, bloodied and unbowed, will actually lead to zero changed votes. He might be the only person in the universe that would be true of.

It sucks that the media is too cowardly/driven by conservative figureheads to hammer on the fact that Trump was nearly done in by the same violence he has so actively whipped up, but it also means his wounded martyr act is ultimately nothing but an empty applause point for his core base

As soon as we learned that Crooks was a registered Republican it was clear that the assassination attempt was going to be a two-day story.

Good post. Bad project 2025. A reminder: the last time we had a serious purge of the State Department, we kicked out most of our best and most knowledgeable experts on East Asia. At the time, people might not have foreseen the need for people who knew A LOT about countries like, oh, VIETNAM.

The midterms gave pretty clear evidence that trans-baiting is not a winning tactic.

So far this is basically the trans-bashing convention and (1) it's disgusting, and (2) I'm really not sure it's what normal people want to hear from a political party. Also if any neutral media type really care about "lowering the temperature" they should start note the hate speech in Milwaukee.
