"This time around, Trump is not just a celebrity with a lot of sexual assault allegations and bankruptcies...as he was in 2016. He’s a convicted criminal who orchestrated a coup attempt to steal an election both through backroom corruption and public lies and through a violent attack on Congress."
Thanks to the great Rebecca Solnit for stating what countless millions have been thinking over the past ten days of mass insanity gripping the pundit class:
Yes. And it’s not memory loss. The pundits have been doing this ever since Reagan: rallying around Republicans, ignoring Republican outrages (how Reagan became “Teflon”), deflecting onto the smallest of issues about Democrats. Remember Dukakis tank fiasco? Obama suit color? #InstitutionalAdHominem
I remember all those things. I even remember going to the dentist the day after the Bush-Dukakis debate and listening to two old biddies tell each other why they couldn't vote for Dukakis because he allegedly had "shifty eyes". The ascent of Reagan made clear we live in a telecracy:
Humans are easily hacked.
Evil will always exploit the technology of the time to further itself.
Thomas Jefferson hired someone to publish scurrilous propaganda against John Adams in pamphlets.
The Nazis exploited all available media.
Social media is new fuel. We must adapt or perish.
"Candidates do not win elections by themselves." We've just demonstrated this in spades in the UK. Elections are won with coordination, collaboration, team effort. Once you've picked your runner, any doubts must be completely private inside the party. To the outside world you've got to unite.
The answer is very simple…money. The billionaires who own the outlets want lower taxes, and the outlets made way more money under Trump. They want Trump to win. Pushing Biden out will only create chaos which will help Trump.
I’m not the pundit class but I’m feeling pretty desperate to push Biden out of the race. I was also a caregiver for my dad and saw first hand the entire progression from mild cognitive impairment, through moderate, and onwards. This problem will not get better. He should step aside & endorse Kamala
”We've providentially been provided with a chance to punish the people who foisted the 2020 - and 2016 - nominations on us. I for one think we should embrace that.
Trump can wait."
Or "Trump is scary, but fun. Like a rollercoaster. America loves rollercoasters."
"According to one journalist’s tally, the New York Times has run 192 stories on the subject since the debate, including 50 editorials and 142 news stories. The Washington Post, which has also gone for saturation coverage, published a resignation speech they wrote for him."
😒
"Of the 86 percent of likely voters who watched all or part of the debate, just 29 percent said Biden has the mental capacity and physical stamina to serve another four-year term, compared with 61 percent who said he does not."
"Only 33 percent said he should continue as the Democratic nominee, versus 52 percent who believe he should not. And just half of Democrats said Biden should be the party’s nominee or is mentally and physically fit to serve out another term."
"[They're] repeating the mistakes of 2016"? What mistakes? They've never admitted there were any mistakes in 2016. They think they did fine; why should they do anything different this time?
