Every big media organization was so crossed-up by Trump winning in 2016 that they have been behaving and hiring as if Long Island-Coded Suburbo-Racist Sociopathy was on an unstoppable ascent worldwide, and interpreting everything backwards from there. It turns out most people actually hate it!
Honestly, what kind of bananas frame this story like this? Is shit serious or not, fucken freaks?

My single most "I am getting old" complaint is I miss when phones had a wired headphones jack. I spend at least half my writing session every day fighting with Bluetooth headphones.

All it took was one gatekeep-y Letterboxd comment saying I Saw the TV Glow can ONLY be read as a trans narrative for me to complete a heel turn and say that, NO, IT IS ABOUT WHEN YOU LOVE A TV SHOW JUST THAT MUCH.

Of all the leftovers I expected to eat as a mother, the body of Christ was pretty low on the list.

The new national anthem of the United States of America is "Vindicated" by Dashboard Confessional.
You have to pick a new national anthem for the US, but it has to be a song that plays at least once a week on your city's equivalent of Jack-FM (a sort of all-purpose "top 40 from 1970 to 2010" station, skewing rock but not averse to pop/R&B/etc.).

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

Going to get through this bout of catastrophizing about the future of this country the way I get through all my bouts of catastrophizing about things: making up some little guys and being mean to them.

We need more, but credit where due: both The Nation (June 2024 issue) and Boston Review have run a breakdown of the Project 2025 “Mandate for Leadership” document. Media Matters, too. Lots of good work going on digesting this. www.bostonreview.net/articles/ins... www.mediamatters.org/project-2025
Where are the columnists who are experts in specific fields, breaking down what the Heritage Foundation + Trump want to do to each individual federal agency? E.g. I read the section dedicated to our intelligence agencies, and had to stop, since I was starting to feel a little nauseous.

The bind the Democrats are in is that replacing Biden at the top of the ticket (presumably with Harris) is a genuinely destructive, self-defeating, probably insane decision, but, also, _not_ replacing Biden is a genuinely destructive, self-defeating, possibly insane decision. Good luck out there!

I'm working on a project rife with heterosexuality, and I need to know: What are the _most_ heterosexual songs that still rule?

I like that the UK seems to have, like, three people with an actual shot at the seat, then another three people who have Bits.
There is a 7 foot tall guy behind Rishi Sunak who likely ran for office just to be able to hold a printed out L behind him during his concession speech.

July 4th is very rough on my dog (he is a royalist and considers George Washington a traitor)

"you're not American why do you care about the 4th of July" mate I'm Indian, any day someone got the Brits to fuck off back to their country is a national holiday for me

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

Rewatching The Passion of the Christ, and it started without subtitles, as though my TV heard me saying I can speak passable German and was, like, "LET'S SEE HOW THIS FUCKER DOES WITH ARAMAIC." They're _entirely different language families_, TV!!!

It is remarkable to me that when they ever deign to name a specific complaint that requires them to overthrow American society (ie, a “revolution”) it’s always something like faculty senates or website DEI statements or calorie counts on menus.

As a Californian, can someone tell me why Gavin Newsom seems to have the heart of every MSNBC Boomer I know? Even on his best days -- and he's had some good ones! -- I can, at best, muster up an eye roll, a heavy sigh, and a "FINE." But they talk of him as some bold champion of progressivism!

Saw the new Quiet Place at one of those showings for new moms, and a baby occasionally cooing really added to the verisimilitude.

In revisiting the show for [PLUG] my book, Back to the Island, out Sept. 20 (order now) [/PLUG], I genuinely became SO SAD for what we've lost. Yes, that show had some STINKER episodes, but the space it had to tell its story! The beautiful production! The ambition!!!
You couldn’t produce Lost on streaming. It needed all that time and space to play and grow and be weird. Three eight episode seasons would not have covered it.
