This is bsky, it's not like I'm a senator where my opinion about it might plausibly matter to anyone making the decision. And the absolute best case scenario would have been for Biden to put the pedal down, put the wreckage of this week behind him, calm the party and light rocketfuel on his campaign

Fire his entire campaign staff and also Jeff Zients

Really weird dynamic these days on bsky that folks can't really distinguish "the Biden campaign is objectively floundering, and that is why folks who are extremely extremely pro-Ds winning in Nov are extremely worried" from "these people are just trying to hurt Biden".

How does "no disagreement on tactics, that's Undermining Morale!" typically work out.....

Joe Biden is the leaky rowboat that we've all been crammed into, and I think people have a lot of trouble distinguishing who is saying "wow being in the leaky rowboat sucks" vs who is drilling holes in the bottom

Also a lot of folks struggling that "him being president would be infinitely, infinitely better than the alternative" and "this campaign is stepping on a lot of rakes and it needs to urgently not step on rakes" are both thoughts you can hold in your head at the same time
Avatar
It's not even very difficult!!

It would help a lot if the media weren't strewing rakes around.

I think a big part of the problem is the media *is* being shit about it. The NYT has lost its fucking mind. I think a lot of the good faith discussion is getting lumped in with a lot of the bad faith discussion, because the there is a lot of bad faith shit out there

They've internalised the balance myth. Trump is a rapey lying felon being used by fascist oligarchs but we have to be balanced so... being old and slow is just as bad.
Avatar
Another related conflation I’ve seen: “people want to replace Biden because of voters’ opinions” with “people want to replace Biden because of their own opinions”.
Avatar
Right. For my part, I don't hugely care if it's Biden or Harris. I think it's not even all that unlikely if it's President Biden it's President Harris shortly afterwards anyway. That's not what this is about
Avatar
The corpse of Joe Biden would make a better president than Trump (I’ll even let the campaign have that as their slogan for free)
Avatar
I know you have good intentions, but like... sometimes intentions don't matter that much. The only person who's going to get to decide this is Biden, and the only ones who will have much influence on that decision are elites. I think our job is to just be foot soldiers against fascism
Avatar
And to me, that means backing whoever the candidate is. If he steps aside for Harris I may grumble in one or two posts about it maybe not being the best decision, but I will also immediately become the most ardent Kamala stan you've ever met
Avatar
totally. I am under absolutely no illusions that my opinions about it one way or the other matter to anyone making the decisions here. Just saying what I think out loud. And in the end, they need to work out who's on the D ticket asap and light the touchpaper on the campaign.

Guess what I'm saying is that it's probably not a good time for the pontificating aloud bit either. Nobody individually is pivotal in this narrative, but we're all ultimately responsible. I'm personally going to be posting like the politics editor for Pravda until election day.

There is a very painful--& painfully long--rant over on the hellsite from Dave Roberts rn. It's so long I couldn't stay with it. He says he's inarticulate with rage and then pretty much goes on at length to prove it. While I agree with what he says, I don't see a solution. As you say, not up to us.
Avatar
Also they did this exact thing last time when they tried to give the nomination to Bloomberg
Avatar
Unironically, I think the problem is bad faith actors pretending they care about tactics when they just care about media narratives or hurting / supporting a candidate. Not an accusation, just a hard situation to separate good and bad faith actors apart.
Avatar
A good faith criticism of Biden's campaign and a bad faith criticism of Biden's campaign will probably look very similar at a glance!
Avatar
Much like criticism of “Zionism”

One thing that I have found jarring is that I haven't seen any progressive elected Dems talk about Biden at all, even those who have huge issues with his Gaza policies. Maybe they have realized that panicking and punching yourself in the face repeatedly is stupid as hell?
Avatar
You might consider whether you’re failing to distinguish “people telling me this looks like a ratfuck from the same paper running anti-voting articles from fascists, so maybe don’t help them ratfuck us” from “I am speaking objective facts and they don’t understand”

It's the exact same vibe as 2016 Hillary supporters, who took the mere existence of Bernie Sanders supporters to be an aggravated assault on their candidate, and then blamed everything that happened on the 'damage done' to her during the primary.
Avatar
I don’t think we should discount the Supreme Court decision that shocked everyone here.

I've been thinking about the line Randy Pausch starts at the 1:43 mark of this video abt once/day for a week. "When you're screwing up, and no one's saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up." youtu.be/ng8TbyvHWdQ?...
