Remember how the "retail theft crime wave" disappeared as soon as companies had to do their annual reports? That's because it's illegal to lie to shareholders. AI is booming (if you're a pleb) but if you have money - Goldman Sachs will be honest with you instead web.archive.org/web/20240629...

I hate that newspapers make it so easy to subscribe online but don't let you cancel online. So, I guess I am calling the NYT to cancel tomorrow. Despite my love for the recipes and reading the paper since I was a kid, I have to stop subsidizing their crap. transphobia, antivax, now antivoting!

History will recall that the New York Times, that bastion of "the liberal media," on July 4, 2024 chose to give prime space on their op-ed page to a theocratic absolutist who argued that people shouldn't vote, even though he himself has voted in the last 2 elections (but nowhere is that mentioned).
When I first saw this I thought "no, that can't possibly be true." But alas, the Times did indeed choose today of all days to publish a right winger's recycled piece about how they don't vote, failing to mention that the author basically thinks absolutist theocracies are cool.

I think @mtsw.bsky.social said, "don't print lies in the newspaper" is an infallible moral heuristic, and he's right, and it is one that the New York Times opinion page manages to fail on an almost-weekly basis.

When people are broadcasting, “Voting doesn’t matter,” if 100k people across the nation don’t vote, it can change the results of a national election.

As @emptywheel.bsky.social said, they published this “voting doesn’t matter” editorial on July Fourth. Shame on them. American independence was declared—and won—by people who gave a damn. And worked for what they won.

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

Imagine for one second if the NYT marshaled its massive influence towards voter registration, towards supporting voting rights groups, towards encouraging people to vote and fighting people who try to stop people from voting. Imagine if the NYT actually championed participatory democracy.

A day later the NYT continues its wall-to-wall coverage on Biden's candidacy. Still waiting for the "Trump should bow out" coverage. On the day we celebrate our independence from a king, and 4 days from when SCOTUS sets up the possibility of a king, this is what our media is focused on.
It's pretty disheartening to see the most influential news org push a narrative that, while important, is by no means the most important story right now. A week after a poor performance, the top 4 stories on the NYT homepage is about Biden's mental facilities. Meanwhile democracy dies in the open.

"Amidst all the tearing of garments and vultures circling, the fact is that we’re still pretty much where we were pre-debate. There are two questions: Is Biden fit to serve? And, would Democrats benefit by forcing him off the ticket? The answers remain 'he is' and 'probably not.'"

I know you seem to think this is the week's biggest story, but the fact that SCOTUS just declared that presidents are now kings is much more significant, both right now and for the future of this country. Stop kowtowing to those who promise nothing but dictatorship.
President Biden's lapses appear to have grown more frequent, more pronounced and, after Thursday’s debate, more worrisome, interviews with current and former White House aides, political advisers, and others who saw Biden in the last few weeks show. nyti.ms/3ROa3sU
