everyone's parents: You will get more conservative as you age
me at 43: Children Should Be Allowed To Vote Monthly On Which Congressperson To Leave Upside Down At The Gas Station
“You’ll get more conservative” maybe had truth when as you aged you actually accumulated property and stuff vs living hand to mouth in a rented bedsit at 53
my mother has hated right wingers all her life, you should hear her rip into the republicans at town meetings. she's 87 and they're all afraid to tell her to shut up because the news guys will make them look bad
I remember watching old people at the bar in a rural town once bitterly run down all their reasons for a ferocious hatred of Republicans. So it’s definitely #notalloldpeople
At a certain point the densest among us realize that even if Welfare Queens were truly endemic in society their existence wouldn’t make anyone else poor. However generations spent cutting every program in sight to spite them turned out to be a fast track to large scale poverty
a core conservative brain dna strand is all about how 'it must be the guy across the street's fault I lost my job, not the guy up on the hill in the mansion'
My intent *may have been* to cause mischief, but I never thought they'd yank the whole thing!
Either way, copies of the Manifesto are usually available for under $1 on Amazon.
My mom tried to push that, "You will get more conservative as you age" canard.
My reply:
"Your short-sighted & cowardly mistake(s) will *not* be mine. I learn & adapt from the repeated failures of history... instead of falling prey to charlatans, selfishness, and myopic pearl-clutching."
“You’ll get more conservative as you age” was never directed at the kids.
It’s for the parents saying it; that’s how they justify themselves to themselves. They know they’re scum, deep down, and they’re ashamed. They tell themselves this little lie.
This. They blamed their age so they wouldn't have to be held accountable for betraying themselves. My mum is almost angry at me for still living the ideals she taught me, because it makes her realise her choice to stop was in fact a choice.
Fr I've become drastically more liberal in the past 5 years, and all it took was hanging out with conservatives at work and hearing the stuff they casually say.
My grandfather told me my whole life I’d get more conservative as I aged.
I went from third-way Democrat when I first became politically aware to Anarcho-Communist.
Me at 18: I’m gonna vote for Dubya
Me at 38: if anyone is caught with unsupervised access to a billion dollars they should be REDACTED on sight and left in a REDACTED to REDACTED
Even better, my dad's a respected retired minister in a major protestant denomination, and I've seen him change some minds in recent years, and make quite a few more at least think about their assumptions.
My parents used to say this. It wasn't true for my mom, either. Pretty much the day after my dad passed, my mom came out as a closet liberal. I don't know that my dad would have been MAGA, but he was obnoxiously adjacent. I wonder how many years my mom kept silent on her true views.
