The thing that's obvious to everyone and that nobody can actually write in the press is that the American (and yes, I'm sure elsewhere too) right wing is led by bad people and the object is to make more people extremely bad in basically every respect. It's anti-society

The authoritarian right has power in America only because the majority of Americans didn't care enough to pay attention, let alone vote. The French saw the danger and stood against it.

Curious how France is described as political chaos because two parties with ≈60% of the seats in Parliament will negotiate a PM, whereas Netanyahu is always described as the will of the Israeli people, rather than the negotiated choice among eight parties with 53% of the seats.
Honestly, what kind of bananas frame this story like this? Is shit serious or not, fucken freaks?

this guy is obviously terrible but there's also a secondary point -- I'm sure he's bullshitting but if he's claiming that he's in knowing possession of counterfeit currency, shouldn't Treasury be paying him a visit?
an entire movement of wicked people who celebrate wickedness

I really don’t think most people realize just how hard the boot will come down if Trump and the Republicans win the election. Most people have never experienced the totalitarian surveillance state with the power to reach into their homes and minds at will they are telling us is their plan.

The only reason republican states are trying to add further restrictions is to prevent poorer people without access to the additional documentation from voting. This has nothing to do with preventing non-citizens from voting.

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

So voting is better than *not* voting when it comes to getting what you want? Huh.

Self-described libertarians are like self-described geniuses, or self-described tough guys. If you need to tell people it’s what you are, it means it isn’t evident from what you say and do, and thus you probably aren’t really.

These mistakes originalist justices are making aren’t about disputed interpretations of history, with evidence on both sides. They’re pulling quotes out of context to attribute ideas to founding figures that those figures adamantly opposed. (via @andycraig.bsky.social) reason.com/volokh/2024/...

Conservatives can’t imagine that a non-straight-white-male is hired on merit but will cheer that right-wing SCOTUS justices limit their clerk pool to those who share their 19th-century ideology. It’s no surprise they end up with silly mistakes and opinions out of step with 21st-century politics.

Absolutely. We do what we want, then we add words. The idea there's any coherent thought beyond that in these decisions is utterly naive.

It’s almost as if originalism was nonsense from the start, just a “scholarly” cover to justify whatever outcome the justices wanted. Now that we’ve pushed past the point where the justices pretend to base opinions on principles, we can dispense with the pretense of judicial ethics and precedent.

I once wrote a fact check of a Morgan Spurlock book. He included what he said was a direct quote from the FDA that aspartame causes cancer. I checked the footnote. An FDA newsletter did publish that claim — but *only to specifically refute it*. That’s basically how Barrett quotes Madison here.

I hope one day we learn if the people who send Laura Loomer fake tips are just normal trolls or state-backed disinformation agents. They're all easily debunked within an hour so the fact that she still does this suggests she's simply a fucking idiot.
