I'm inordinately proud of this flash, and inordinately grateful to the editors at Roi Fainéant for sharing it with readers.
Starting today with some Shakespeare-inspired flash, reimagining Hamlet. "Suppose Gertrude" by @graythebruce.bsky.social asks us to consider how things may have turned out if Gertrude had made a different choice. You should make the right choice & go read it! www.roifaineantpress.com/post/suppose...

My Gertrude-focused, alt-Hamlet microfiction is in today's issue of Roi Faineant! Retells a 30K-word play in 380 words. "Brigands, the courtiers say. Of course, she says. A tragedy, says her suitor. Yes, she says." Infinite gratitude to editor Kellie Scott-Reed. t.co/MTkhJV6YQe
"Suppose Gertrude" by Graham Robert Scottt.co Suppose Gertrude, instead of saying yes, answers no. Oh, she thinks it through, in a long silence that go-between Polonius fills with blather. It’s a tricky situation, and any choice is a gamble. As ...

Even if checking out my book at a library didn't benefit me directly (it does, the library pays for the book and I get royalties for it) it benefits all of us indirectly. Libraries help foster the habit of reading. Some of those readers wouldn't be able to afford books just now. Some are kids.

Amazing stuff comes out of that period of budding, amoral imagination! KID: My friend's name is Mr. Light. You can't see him. PARENT: Wow! KID: He lives in the lamp in the corner. PARENT: That's neat! KID: Sometimes he saves the skins when he's done with people. PARENT: he fucking what now

I think it’s cool we gave an entire medium a prion disease - it’s like a background detail in a DeLillo book
Daughter downloaded a papercraft project from the internet and asked me for help. It confounded me, too. I paused, baffled. How do i— and it's Ai, of course it is. Looks plausible, actually pure gibberish in pictorial form.

Wins for Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One mean this is the first time a movie and its sequel both won Oscars the same year.

One of the few proposed uses of AI I've seen so far that I'm on board with.
I've been working on an "AI" assistant to generate alt text from images, as many of y'all know. I've been happy with its output for a bit, but I'm sharing bc I've finally managed to make it both data secure and free. Check it out. And I know - I just heard a bunch of you groan. Hear me out. 1/x
Alt Text AIalt.assisted.space Welcome to Alt Text AI! This assistant was built to generate descriptive text for the visually impaired, specifically for social media.

I told my guy that he could probably make $10k a pop offering these Silicon Valley techbros an “authentic wilderness experience” by tossing them a sleeping bag, trail mix, and a lantern and assigning them to an abandoned barn, then picking them up three days later.

Did you know that when I write a letter of medical necessity for wheelchair I have to justify every single component of the wheelchair. No axel or type of material is left behind. And they can deny any single part or the whole thing.
Specifically, THE WHEELS. They. denied. the. wheels. On the WHEELchair.

"1 in 20 infected children develop pneumonia and up to 3 in 1,000 children die of the infection." Were I the parent of an unvaccinated child, I'd hate those odds. But I suppose there is high correlation between failure to assess risk and not vaccinating one's kids.
"wow its a huge burden to require kids to quarantine for 21 days to avoid spreading measles" is accurate and a good reason to mandate universal vaccinations against measles, not for ending quarantine requirements.

The hard part of generating a business-style report, for example, isn't generating the text (which is often boilerplate anyway) but *gathering the data*. But that's exactly what you can't trust the AI to do.

In a change to its guidance, CDC will say it’s okay to smoke cloves on the hood of your boyfriend’s Pontiac GT on the edge of a gorge with the parking brake disengaged. “If that’s truly what the cool kids are doing, go fucking nuts I’m tired,” a public health expert was heard to mutter, per sources.

we need more contemporary horror epics...like weaveworld, Dark Tower books, Taisman/Blackhouse, Shadowlands, (even Stephen King's It, I would think would fall into this...)...stuff that takes the bones of epic fantasy, puts into a nasty horror blender, and then scoops out the remains into your head

I don't have this issue with emails. But folks think my name must be rarer than it is. Last year, my payment for a short story went to the wrong Graham Scott. They couldn't accept that they paid the wrong guy. Kept telling me to open his account and transfer the funds to my "preferred" account.
so I get emails that are not for me, addressed to me, like the account for cpolk a's car maintenance program the account for cpolk b's wal-mart orders the account for cpolk c's republican stuff (GIRL. can we talk, actually no, ew) like there are more.

Love the argument about fear, here, both in the post and in the newsletter. I haven't watched the Puss in Boots movie (yet), but it's convinced me to do so.
Both Batman and James Bond used to get *scared out of their wits*, and that was when they were actually cool. Heroes who get terrified ROCK. I'm prepping my next newsletter, but I just wanted to reup last weeks in case you missed it: buttondown.email/charliejane/...
