I went out to the garden 🌱early to water and look at my plants. While I was standing under my cattle panel arch, a hummingbird buzzed me and then landed on the trellis right in front of me and just sat for a minute with me before it zoomed away. Magic.

Pfft science. Orange yolks and brown shells are just better.

i know there are countless blind taste tests and studies showing that the color of egg yolk has no discernable difference, but there's no way to convince me that yellow yolks are as appealing as orange yolks. this is probably my most bougie opinion because i WILL spend more for the fancy eggs.

My glads are blooming and sadly this one fell over so now it’s added beauty inside instead of in the garden. 🌱

Something that's clear and very helpful to keep in mind is that I have ZERO influence over what will happen re: who the Democratic nominee will be at the August convention. So I'm going to keep it moving and focus on what I can influence.

There are huge full size fireworks going off within a block of us and every time a particularly loud one shakes the windows and startles me, I mutter “motherFUCKER” under my breath so it’s very relaxing around here is what I’m saying.

Where is the lie

My kid is playing a video game and needs to give a dog a name. She says, “Let’s name it something really scary, like Taxes. Ok come on Taxes, let’s go.”

Heatwave is bringing on a bloom of cool colors in the cottage garden. 🌱

Well, I made a large platter of salad rolls filled with garden veg, herbs, grilled halloumi and a hummus-ish chickpea spread and most of them disappeared before I could take a picture. I did get a snap of the s’mores rice krispy treats before the hordes descended. 🍽️🍜🌱

Sometimes gardening is very humbling. For example, this is my entire fava bean harvest this year. Behold the bounty!!! 🌱

My hard boiled eggs for potato salad turned out absolutely perfect. Simply Recipes never steers me wrong on method.

I picked some early garlic a few weeks ago. The rest is coming out this weekend so I’m tying these up into little braids as party favors for the potluck we are going to this afternoon. 🌱 🧄

I think I’m making salad rolls with a loose Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flavor profile. Grilled halloumi, herbs, possibly a chickpea spread, lots of garden veg and both a tzatziki and a pomegranate molasses tahini dip.

What should I make for a snacky potluck tomorrow? Vegetarian and gf friendly, other people are already bringing pizza, mezze platter, fruit salad… I was hoping to have more from the garden but right now I have carrots and baby turnips and a handful of snap peas. 🍽️🍜

I remember reading this when it was first posted on the other site; it is no less enjoyable now as a repeat, and, I might add, perfect for reading aloud to one’s partner so we can both share in the horrifying comedy.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

I don’t think this counts as gruel even though it does have a serving of oats, but it’s delicious. Cherry almond oatmeal “clafoutis” with an oat crumble. 🍜🍽️

Destroying my savory oatmeal cred by remembering the sweet local cherries in my fridge and deciding that a clafoutis/oatmeal mashup with an oat crumble topping was the only possible solution. 🍽️🍜
