The coconut crab (Birgus latro) is the largest terrestrial arthropod, growing up to 9 lbs (4 kg) & 3 ft (1 m) across. They're a type of giant hermit crab: adapted to life on land to the point that they can drown in seawater, although females still need access to water to lay eggs.
