I spoke to some analysts who said Israel's goal now is to stay in control of Gaza (a la West Bank). Essentially, to find a partner (Arab states, PA, or Int'l comm) to run civil services while they maintain security control over the Palestinian enclave. www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/7/...
What does Israel want in Gaza?www.aljazeera.com A ‘defeat’ of Hamas seems out of reach, while analysts say recently a announced ‘Phase Three looks more like occupation.

Glad to see this piece on the New Popular Front from Piketty and Cagé. While almost all the attention has been on the gains by the right, the success of a unified left with an ambitious program seems like just as an important story from the French elections. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I've come to the conclusion that there are 3 types of people who do not understand why people are mad about Gaza, 1. They're bewildered as to why people care about non-Americans, and are hence racist. 2. They are ignorant of the scale of horror, and hence racist. 3. They're happy with it, and hence,

Maybe I'm naive but the fact people are still demanding top down rule in Arab countries and imaging this will lead to some idealistic existence really hits me like a ton of bricks a few times a week. But of course, they don't want our people to be free, they wan't "peace, stability, prosperity"

I remember flying to Beirut last Sept thinking that the days of Lebanon being an international story might be over. I was looking forward to dive into local human rights-based issues & struggles. I guess I was very wrong

“Nothing we can do to stop this forthcoming war,” says world’s last superpower as they refuse to condition aid or stop weapons flow, and give 500lb bombs plus assurances of support to Israel.

This is my reading as well. This escalation is happening in parallel with negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza & along Lebanon's border. If those issues are not settled, we may see a devastating war for Lebanon & more damage than Israel is used to.
"A large-scale confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah is likely to break out in the next several weeks. The U.S. offers a slightly more conservative assessment than those coming from parts of Europe. Some European countries calculate that a war between Israel and Hezbollah could happen in days."
US intel indicates war between Israel and Hezbollah inching closerwww.politico.com The State Department urged U.S. citizens Thursday to “strongly reconsider” travel to Lebanon.

www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/6/... Since Oct 8, Israel has hit Lebanon 6142 times. Hezbollah & other militias have struck Israel 1258 times in that same period, according to ACLED. There have been 564 combined deaths (21 are Israeli deaths)
Mapping 7,400 cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanonwww.aljazeera.com Hezbollah has warned of a ripple effect across the Mediterranean Sea if Israel widens its conflict against Lebanon.

An analyst told me (cited in the piece) that he expects escalation as Netanyahu visits congress. The latest escalation could be messaging between Israel and Hezbollah as they continue negotiations & a signal of strength to their own populations. But let’s see
If Israel decides to widen the war on Hezbollah in Lebanon, more actors in the so-called Axis of Resistance will escalate their attacks on Israeli & American interests. My latest for Al Jazeera English www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/6/...
Hezbollah’s ‘axis of resistance’ allies waiting in reserve to fight Israelwww.aljazeera.com Analysts believe that an expanded conflict could encourage foreign fighters to support Hezbollah and fight Israel.

I can’t tell you how many interviews I have with westerners who say things like maybe the solution for Lebanon is to match certain aspects of UAE or KSA & you know they mean installing a dictator. Those leaders are a plague on their own people and us as well.
Globalizing the intifada should mean shaking off all dictators

Got news the other day that some of the best english-language Arab journalists in the region are struggling for work. There’s seemingly been a schism in much of the media. Arabs working in foreign languages won’t continue allowing double standards on Palestine & western outlets won’t reform.

Turning a big dial that says "Racisme" on it
“On Tuesday, Mr. Macron accused the new left-wing New Popular Front alliance of Socialist, Green & far-left parties of being totally “immigrationiste” — a word often used by Ms. Le Pen’s party to describe politicians who encourage uncontrolled immigration.” It’s all masks off in The West.
The Nation Resurgent, and Borders, Toowww.nytimes.com In France, as in the United States, feelings harden against immigrants, and President Emmanuel Macron and President Biden take note.

Look, truth is, you gotta cover your back when making such reports. We all hear a lot of hearsay and some is super interesting. But if you don’t have the sources or data it’s possible it’ll fall apart on you
The Telegraph reported that anonymous whistleblowers claim Hezbollah is keeping weapons at Beirut Airport. It’s a bizarre claim that has many Lebanon analysts casting doubt on its likelihood. The caretaker public works minister denied the report & said tomorrow at 10am media can go inspect site

A ceasefire could seriously calm rising tensions in the region. Hezbollah has threatened Cyprus (likely a ploy to get EU partners to call on Israel not to proceed with expanded war on Leb) & Houthis & IRI are attacking ships in Med now. Foreign fighters could rush into fight too.

The Houthis and Islamic Resistance groups in Iraq are now teaming up to hit Israeli ships in the Mediterranean.

Nasrallah just said in a speech that Israel is planning to use Cypriot bases for attacks on Lebanon and if they do, Hezbollah won’t hesitate to attack Cyprus. Fwiw Cyprus is not a NATO member
