I think also people fixate on for-profit prisons without considering why there is a demand a private prison could meet - why, culturally, our society devalues rehabilitation and even deterrence in favor of sadistic retribution.

Something I just saw come up in a TikTok: Folks really do fixate on racist systems being driven by "hate" without ever reckoning or even learning about the many ways those systems economically profited the oppressors. Segregation and Jim Crow and White Riots were all VERY profitable to oppressors.

keep thinking about this w/r/t the press relentlessly promoting a "Trump adopting a unifying message after the shooting" story. The MAGA freaks think it's hilarious that the press is so stupid and they're not even really wrong.

I think honestly a key to Trump's popularity. He inverted the theatrical aspect from one where the Meet The Press class were in on the joke and the conservative voters were the rubes, to one where the conservative chuds were in on the joke and the DC crowd were the rubes bsky.app/profile/rinc...

I was explaining to my partner, who's an atheist with a Catholic upbringing, the relationship of Episcopalianism to Catholicism concerning like the sacraments and all that. I think this is what Toni Morrison meant when she called racism a distraction. how many hours wasted on trying to convince racist white people that police brutality is always wrong? racism makes all of us less safe.

this is kind of bleak, but it's interesting to be in Kenya and see people discuss police brutality without ever blaming the victims. there isn't a contingent of loud white people saying Black people deserve it. and it's a relief and allows folks to be focused on the true enemy

I said stuff to this effect when Yglesias got ran off the platform but you can’t seriously have a long term functional social media site where the right edge of acceptable discourse is to the left of Yglesias or NYT. For one thing, you kill your ability to move people to the left.

Kaitlyn leaving would be the last straw for me, which is unfortunate because I've devoted a moderate amount of time to building tools for this site.
