Everybody freaking out about extrajudicial killings is going to lose it when they find out about the existence of cops.

It was either you, or someone else, that pointed out "dystopian fiction is such because it's written by white people in regards to what would happen if white people experienced what everyone else has been living for years".
Avatar
That’s a famous-ish quote by someone else.
Avatar
The corollary is the total terror of white people at the idea of losing power because we have seen what we did with it and are terrified someone else will do that to us. "I tremble for my country when I reflect" and all that.

I always HATED the novel “the handmaid’s tale” because MA totally glossed over mass genocide of POC by “sending them to the colonies” … to center it on “pretty white women used as broodmares”. ( they dodged that in the tv show, making it a better piece of art)
Avatar
Right? They didn't make Trump a king, they made him a cop.

And an executioner without any rules.

not to mention the mass shooters specifically targeting Black people and areas to start a race war every few months
Avatar
It’s so awful watching Black people (and other minority groups) get targeted and killed while people work up more passion for the imagined horrors of January 2025.
Avatar
My concern is more that a second Trump term would promise police around the country immunity for brutalizing people, especially minorities It's bad now, but they don't have explicit sanction from the highest office in the country Your current concerns are 100% correct

The cops will be given blanket powers for the extrajudicial killings

The calls to suspend court cases for murder and assault aren’t happening. SCOTUS has said qualified immunity stands and that they don’t have to protect anyone, but there’s settlements every day for actions that violate policing. Won’t be long before that changes though.
Avatar
Settlements are meaningless horseshit. It's literally a way to avoid any accountability, while not angering the police union, and the penalty is paid by ... oh yeah, you the taxpayer. Congratulations, sucker, you just agreed to paid the expenses of a rogue cop who still has his job and pension.
Avatar
Plus, those settlements aren't paid for by the cops. They're paid for by tax dollars.
Avatar
settlements don’t come out of the cops’ pockets
Avatar
Could try asking Chauvin
Avatar
You mean like, the one cop who ever went to jail for murdering black people? He's literally the exception, not proof of anything. I mean, occasionally the justice system has to throw a bone to keep the masses settled.
Avatar
Eric Devalkenaere. Don't let me ruin the narrative though.
Avatar
Never heard of him. And now you're up to 2 cops? Wow. Well, my impression of dozens of cops seen on video murdering people and then never going to jail for it is dashed, just like that. All it took was for you to name 2 cops that went to jail.
Avatar
Derek Chauvin is currently in prison in Arizona

It's a good start, but it's so rare. When a cop does something awful, I feel it's a win if they catch a felony, of any sort, because that means they won't be a cop again, and it's so rare, no matter how awful the crime. Radley Balko is a great follow for this stuff. @radleybalko.bsky.social

Yep, he's about an hour south of me.

LOL, the Tulare County Sheriff's Office killed my abuelita's little brother back in 1965 and got away with it but now the white people are panicking!

The fact that some people get away with terrible things now does not mean that things can't get much, much, much worse.
Avatar
"The Joker said he's going to poison the water supply!" "Wow, sounds like someone forgot that Flint Michigan already happened? And only now do you care?"
Avatar
The fact that the water in Flint was already poisoned (a terrible thing, it shouldn't have happened) is not a good reason for allowing the water to get poisoned in 100s of other cities. Would you let a wildfire engulf an entire city this year because one got out of control last year?
Avatar
Congratulations, you grasped the point of what I was saying.
Avatar
Depends. Is the city Dallas?
Avatar
... for white people
Avatar
I think rule under Trump would be much worse for everyone --in particular immigrants of color whom his people have already said they will round up in deport. My gut says it will be worse for Muslims. My white sister-in-law, who is an immigrant, will probably not be treated as badly.

*for white people Everyone else is already well aware and prepared.

People acting like the US just got bad as if it wasn't founded on genocide and slavery. But oh no our fake democracy is at stake
Avatar
Full immunity from prosecution and the ability to rob you as well. Legally...
Avatar
Maybe we should to come together and stop trying to normalize either of them. How about that? 34-felon sure isn't going to promote police accountability!
Avatar
Denying that it is a historic problem is an attempt to normalise it
Avatar
My point exactly! So how about we fight it (together!) instead of snidely equating the current situation with an "historic problem" (which is what the original post was doing).
Avatar
You can't fight it by dismissing anyone talking about the size and scale of it as 'snide'. You can't ignore how we got here if you want to take a different path.
Avatar
Read the original post and my answer. I'm ignoring NOTHING. And in fact, I'm pointing out that we should NOT ignore (aka normalize) how we got here! Done. Have a good day.
Avatar
No. You are rejecting any discussion of the past and that is how you will repeat it.
