Here is the good news: that’s not what’s happening, and it’s not what’s going to happen. Democrats in Congress believe our presidential candidate is incapable of serving as the nominee. Most Democrats agree. He will be replaced atop the ticket by his Vice President. It will be okay.

Here's the thing. If a bunch of rich people manage to bully the party into kicking out the *elected candidate* and replace him with literally anyone and we go into the election with a person chosen by a bunch of rich people that nobody had a chance to vote for our democracy is already dead.

It is silly to think that the 2024 primary--which in many cases only allowed you to vote for Biden, and in no cases offered people a real alternative--is a more legitimate expression of democracy than all the polls where people say the president is too old and they want someone else.

Just huge gaps between the presidential & Senate races in today's 7 state polls. In 5 YouGov polls, the gap between Biden's deficit in the presidential race & Dems' leads in Senate races ranges from a net 11% to a net 15%. In 2 Siena/NYT polls, the net gap is nearly identical: 11% to 14%.

The ads practically write themselves

From the JD Vance (Senate) campaign website. JD Vance would ban every single woman (or girl) from receiving an abortion, no matter the circumstances by which she was impregnated or the danger to her health. Maybe (just maybe) if she risks imminent death.

I’ve now seen two Reddit posts showing things that the deceased victim in Saturday’s shooting has written online that were arguably in poor taste or asshole-ish… and can folks not do that?

By all accounts, he was a good person whose family loved him dearly and is mourning. And to the extent that people like him become compelled to act like an asshole online, make that story about the current leaders of the Republican Party exploiting fear for political ends.

When I look back over shootings, political and otherwise, what connects them is less ideology and more somewhat unstable, somewhat pitiful people who don't seem to be able to make much of a life for themselves and just concoct something hateful instead.

Even though Crooks was a registered Republican and his classmates describe him as “conservative,” he’s being shoehorned into a story about the murderous “left” that seeks to destroy “us” and so must be dealt with accordingly. This is a permission structure for totalitarianism.
