New papers about impact rates from InSight data. One led by Ingrid Daubar looks at those measured by InSight and confirmed by orbital observations, while the other led by Geraldine Zenhäusern and Natalia Wojcicka interprets an entire class of seismic events as impacts. www.brown.edu/news/2024-06...

Despite working with gifted engineers and having every design step reviewed by a million people, nearly every step in the process of building something to fly to space goes wrong, and involves constantly adjusting. Also, some (or every) part of every space mission will not work as planned…
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

I love Griffith Park. And I enjoy the namesake’s name is the ridiculous Griffith J Griffith. Unfortunately, he also got a lenient <2 year sentence for shooting his wife in the head (she survived but lost an eye), because he was suffering from “alcoholic insanity.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffit...

I’m torn between liking any time seismologists/seismology makes news, and being annoyed when this is just saying seismometers are really amazing instruments that can measure lots of things which have nothing to do with earthquakes. 🧪⚒️
Earthquake readings were strongest when Taylor Swift performed “ … Ready for It?” The crowd during the four-minute performance transmitted about 80 kilowatts of power, which is equivalent to the power that roughly 6,000 car batteries produce, the British Geological Survey said.
Swifties set off earthquake sensors again. These songs made the biggest stir.wapo.st Fans caused the most seismic activity as Taylor Swift sang “... Ready For It?” at the Eras Tour, which produced as much power as 6,000 car batteries make, experts said.

My favorite part of this article, which contains a lot of weird tech bro vision of what human consciousness is stated as absolute fact mixed in with more reasonable concerns about allowing AI to move forward unchecked, is the last correction:

If you choose to focus on “core competencies” or eliminate “low-performing” departments, or whatever the corporate speak of the day is, you’re kinda missing the point of being called a “university.”
Removing most or even many of these departments would mean ceasing to function as a university for all intents and purposes. Looking for cost savings by analyzing department “cash flow” is extremely short sighted, there are a lot of interconnected pieces here that are difficult to disentangle.

So sad. Ed Stone, the #Voyager Project Scientist, died 2 days ago. Voyager was the pinnacle in spaceflight that it became because of him. tinyurl.com/bdz7wbfe It was such a joy to recall the mission w/ Ed & others in 2017 on the 40th annvsry of its launch. It was a pleasure flying w/ you Ed. RIP

I never met him although I think I saw him on lab once or twice pre-pandemic. But he seemed pretty awesome, and pretty awesome that he got to spend 50 years as project scientist on a single mission (while of course doing other things like directing the lab and what not).

Feeling a little sick today with a nasty sore throat and a vague fever and general malaise (a wonderfully Victorian sounding condition), so I’m laying on the couch on my balcony, and the hummingbird has no fear about snacking with me only about ten feet away.

I could go poorly spelled InSight-inspired and do MARS QUAK.

Went hiking up the trail to Mt Josephine today, although it was sunny enough that I felt I didn’t bring enough water and cut off before the peak. But the flowers and yucca blooms were crazy and the clouds were something else.

But they’re fancy gluten free Oreos with often unnatural colors, and that, my friend, makes all the difference.
Macarons are just fancy Oreos. Discuss.

This is one hell of a thread.
When dealing with pseudoscience, the devil is in the detail - in this case, narrowing down a specific "Lab Leak" hypothesis. In Dr. Chan's @nytimes.com OpEd there is, however, a very specific hypothesis for COVID-19 origin. It's a prime example of conspiracism vs empiricism, so let's dive in. 🧵

I was questioning the definition of “post-grunge” in my daylist when it included Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, and Stone Temple Pilots, but it crossed a line when it included Jane’s Addiction and the Pixies.
I’m beginning to think the Spotify Daylist names are just a meaningless string of words with no connection to the music they’re playing whatsoever.

What if you spot a high-heritage Space Unicorn?
Americans don't know the best road trip game: Horse. Let me explain: . 1. If you see a horse, shout 'Horse!' If you're the first one to see it, you get a point a. A pony counts as a horse b. A full-sized statue of a horse counts as a horse c. Anything else (billboard, zebra, etc) is not a horse

Baseball gambling penalties are nonsensical. Michael Kelly bet $100 on major league games while he was a minor leaguer and he’s suspended for a year. Too bad he couldn’t find an interpreter to take the fall for him.
