The issue is we haven’t had many swing state VP picks in recent decades from which to extrapolate. (There are good reasons to think safe state effects are greater.)
In fairness to the chorus, early reporting indeed suggested the campaign would shy away from the issue. Maybe the public response shifted the approach at the margins.
