37) Daniel Mason, North Woods Ecological succession: framed as stories of people living over time in a house in forested western Massachusetts. Despite some silliness and poetry (which I skipped as usual), I'll say it's on my best of the year list; the ecosystems stuff at the end made me cry.

A Powdered Dancer (Argia moesta) damselfly from Sideling Hill Creek State Park. It was so dry up there that there were hardly any butterflies, but tons upon tons of these dancers for some reason. #dragonfly

The thing I'm worried about - aside from more violence - is Democrats losing momentum on pushing back on Project 2025 now because of decorum or whatever. I don't know how much they were really leading the charge there, but it works better if the Biden campaign keeps bringing it up.

The number of stories about the handful of Democrats calling for Biden to step down is impressive. Mathematically it’s like interviewing 20 dentists about their favorite toothpaste and writing 1,000 articles about the one guy who said “activated charcoal.”

36) Camille Bordas, How to Behave in a Crowd The portrait of an eccentric French family, seen through the eyes of the youngest boy, a 12-year-old. A fun read, often very funny. More French details in it like language and street names would have better established the setting. But not a huge deal.

There's been a lack of #dragonfly and #damselfly content from me so far this summer, for which I can only apologise. So here's a rare sight - the UK's two Demoiselle species at the same spot. Beautiful Demoiselle sat on the leaf, Banded Demoiselle in flight. #invertebrates #ukwildlife

I have an astronomical app that notifies me of things, which means that I was just able to make the pronouncement "The Moon is hiding Spica," which is a sentence I'm sure I've never used before

We’ve returned to the olden days, when word-of-mouth was the only real way to advertise. As an author, if you enjoy a book, please: tell your friends. Your group chat, your sewing circle, your family WhatsApp, your work Slack, the voice channel of your MMORPG guild, anything.
Hey, so. I understand that this is anecdotal and not research, but. It is WILD how useless social media has become for promo. It's a fucking disgrace, really.

Book 35) Hari Kunzru, Blue Ruin A gig worker shows up to make a delivery at a house that happens to be where friends of his from art school days are staying. On my best of the year list - there's so much packed into this book: art, race, relationships, and the early days of the COVID pandemic.

Just like none of the bold investigators backfilling Joe Biden's feeble debate performance with punchy anonymous quotes have ever figured out why Trump was rushed to Walter Reed, claimed he wanted a spur-of-the-moment weekend checkup, and a year later declared that he had NOT had a series of strokes
"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!

For real though it sucks that Britain, a damp rock the size of one of my city's medium sized parks, has a legislature with more representatives than the United States. We deserve better.
No but I love when all you beautiful sickos start posting shit like "Bogroubler flips Hambarn upon Gwynyychlyyrah! A huge result!" It's like hanging out with people being poisoned by carbon monoxide. None of those places are real

Y E S (I keep telling people to read THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS, read it please) It gave me the same 'so full of emtions I'm about to pop' feeling as at the end of PIRANESI As if the whole novel happened within one house, and the ending opened the front door to a WHOLE NEW GIANT WORLD
Wow just finished @vajra.me’s The Saint of Bright Doors and I’m so full of emotions. Maybe I’m over reading a bit but it also seems so about current events in certain ways…
