The politics poster your mom warned you about. Impeach, exhume, try, and convict Richard M. Nixon. Occasional earnest lib posting, but sorry about it. Press secretary for The Prophetess of Discourse. Brainworms taxonomist. he/him

Conventional wisdom going into the debate was he needed to nail it with a bunch of groups and he showed up with the facts in hand to do it
Avatar
Several people have just outright said they think every old person gets dementia and im legit angry about it
Avatar
My position is that Joe Biden is clearly lucid, and was as the debate was airing. Man did really well on content, I'd actually like to know some of his memory tricks for my students

Don't know if harris will be there Don't know if I'll be here Welcome to mortality, it kind of sucks

Cracking the joke about using grandmother's barbecue ribs recipe as I open Sweet Baby Ray's (This is her advice)

Trump came in with this right wing tide, or perhaps *was* the tide, and now hopefully he flows out with it

Le Pen carrying on the only laudable Vichey tradition; losing

To be sure, there is a reason u knew it existed!

The fact that they sound like my untreated depression is not something they are usually ready to hear

At one point your thesis was that this would be the natural outcome of the convention choosing a candidate; perhaps not?
Avatar
It's about as original as 50 Shades of Grey; you can decide how important that is as a yardstick
Avatar
Her choices also look downright inclusive set next to this, which is only a defense of her choices insofar as you lower the bar here
Avatar
He literally wrote the early drafts to include Narnia, so this example may not be doing what you hope it does

The whole genre where people make up things Rowling did not do and get mad at them is, I think, a window into what a lot of the criticism is doing
Avatar
So I have been getting this recommended at me for years and the thumbnail reduces down to "Because the UK hasn't abolished it's class system" ...does it deal with that, at all?
Avatar
The mystery is "what is Lupin's deal", though, and "Lupin" ends up being a meta-textual clue
Avatar
Sorry, what is your point here?

It works best when she is embracing that a magical world is chaotic and not internally consistent and a contrast to our drabber world, which she maintains *reasonably* well through the septology. her attempts to clean it up have been unconvincing
Avatar
I don't think it holds up to the Tolkien-style analysis people want, but it's remarkable how well it handles the tone shift overall, how the changing relationship to magic comes to be a fairly deliberate metaphor for growing up, and how actually reading the books gives the *appearance* of cohesion
Avatar
Me, unprompted: I'm so burned out on Rowling I can't imagine re-reading HP anytime soon and I'm totally out of the fandom Me, when I see people taking potshots at Harry Potter in place of criticizing Rowling: Listen here, Jack
Avatar
This is such a pervasive style choice on her part that I cannot imagine engaging with it as being "bad" at coming up with names Like, you can fairly say it's not your bag, but the layers of on-the-nose, punny names are a feature, not a bug, of her creative process
Avatar
Now, if you want to just talk about how you can't stand the books books anymore because the creative behind them is a major driver of bigotry and human rights rollbacks in the UK, well, don't let me slow you down
Avatar
"She named the werewolf after wolves from Roman legend!" I, yes? The whole classical and medieval reference game is a whole layer of the text? She was not going for absolute realism in her whimsical wizarding world?
Avatar
Yes, that's what we're all doing, you win
Avatar
I think she's one step ahead of us on that! She has picked the obviously correct person and there will be overwhelming because of the obviousness. I mean, have you heard her accent!
Avatar
I haven't been able to find any polling on her national standing the last few days, but that could well reflect how much 2024 was a foregone conclusion a year ago (ahem!) or my lazy Googling
Avatar
I've been in enough conversations where a position being attacked is just so wildly off base in terms of what adherents would agree is fair that it felt necessary to defend positions I didn't agree with for intellectual honesty
Avatar
My go-to example is all sorts conspiracy theorizing about how anti-choice groups have some secret, overarching plot to saddle every woman with kids to help oligarchs and, like, no, guys, they just think it's murder, a position preposterous enough we don't have to invent a fan fiction to attack
