I think this is the fundamental asymmetry underlying every aspect of the conflict between the parties; you see it in the Senate, in gerrymandering, in the use of executive power

Running a new candidate requires:
- figuring out who that will be
- establishing a whole new national campaign for them
- funding said campaign
- advertising & traveling
All in 16 weeks, and that's assuming the candidate is popular enough to beat a cult figure head GOP will vote lock-step for.
You don’t even have 16 weeks, because you won’t be on the ballot in all 50 states. The GOP would love to derail this before the vote.
Plus skipping over Harris based on her being a Black woman will destroy the coalition.

It definitely seems like a structurally untenable situation when only one side ever need bother to ask "what if my enemies had the power I'm proposing"
One other aspect is the debt limit, budget agreements. GOP not caring if people starve, freeze, go without services, pay etc gives them extra leverage in negotiations.
There is no greater proof that the Democrats are an abject failure than the fact that the GOP isn’t worried, not even a bit, about the prospect of Biden having criminal immunity.
The Republicans' job, as they see it, is to sabotage and obstruct government function when out of the Oval, and abuse power in favor of wealthy corporatists when in.
