YES THAT WORKED SO WELL AND DID NOT AT ALL THROW THE PARTY INTO A DIVISIVE NOMINATION CONTEST AND LOST ELECTION THAT WOULD HAUNT IT FOR THE NEXT HALF CENTURY

I am becoming a combination of Nelson Polsby and the Joker

And so are we all. I've invoked Will Rogers on the disorganization of the D party since I started voting ('68? '70? '72? - whenever I was first eligible to vote in MI.) I'd REALLY like to retire that cold-comfort quote from my repertory, but events continue to have other plans for us.

You definitely don't hate LBJ enough to be Nelson.

"So I'm reading this history of 1968. Such an important year. Anyway I'm only about halfway through but already there are so many lessons."

I think it's going to turn out great!

They can’t all be be bangers. Look at his full body of work…oh Christ never mind.

Knowing that people are paid to be like this while legitimate writers struggle to make ends meet makes me so 🙃

You don’t get a column at the Post for being smart or thoughtful. I’d bet 90% of their traffic is hate reading and people like me posting their trash and commenting, “Look at this asshole.”

A good editor would get this piece and hand it back with “finish reading the Wikipedia entry for the 1968 election and revise” written in the margin instead of publishing it.

Von Drehle was 7 years old in 1968. I was 16 and still remember what an absolute terrible year it was.

I was six years old in 1968, and I know what a clusterfuck it was. That ain't age, it's willful ignorance.

What value has Von Drehle ever added to /any/ conversation? The dude utterly defines mediocrity.

Somebody who wasn't hurt, and won't be hurt, by what happened next.

Broder phoned it in on an ouija board.

Trump's choice to bow out would in fact be hugely popular.

Dave Von Drehle. I'm sure Ignatius has a similar "get out, Joe" piece as well.
Avatar
Ignatius sure does. And attempts to Lady Macbeth frame Jill Biden for the current situation. Epic.

Is that the Yahoo piece that cites the NY Post?

It's not hard to keep a president up all night before a debate, especially with Putin doing Putin

They work for a society that is enthusiastic about federalism

Although they are neither federalists nor a society for that matter.

So definitely in good faith then.

Was absolutely convinced this was a Photoshop because of the lack of a byline. And the content

Thank you--can't stand "call out" posts that never attach a name. If it bears out to a pattern of anti-democratic behavior, no public thinker should enjoy a reputable standing by effortlessly blending into the faceless blob of their outlet, but should be rendered an unserious joke like Chuck Todd.

Apart from all the rest, just tossing it out there that in the four years that followed LBJ withdrawing, Nixon appointed *four* supreme court justices
Avatar
hey how bad could Supreme Court Chief Justice MTG be anyway
Avatar
Ideally I would like to never read, hear, or think those words in that order again
Fine fine fine. Supreme Court Justice Bobert instead.
Avatar
No we would get Kasmyrck and Ho. They would both be astronomically worse than that.
Avatar
I think I was being silly but sure
Avatar
I know - but you probably aren't wrong either!!!

It's Justice Paxton that ought to keep you up at night.
Avatar
maybe they'll decide Trump is Constitutionally empowered to nominate greed itself to be a Supreme Court Justice
