People unironically posting Naomi Shihab Nye’s famous fireworks poem today “No Explosions”. Nye is a Palestinian-American poet and this poem is perhaps most apt for #July4 for the US but everyday in Palestine.

Do folks have articles or anecdotes about how they have used university teaching to organize? I teach social policy and privilege and oppression and am trying to figure out how I can use content to encourage political organizing among students. Any insight is welcome!!

This is super interesting and something I want to tell my students in our next class since we have been having a bit of trouble getting along as a class.

Way too many people think of community as "me and all of my friends helping each other." You will not always like everyone you are in community with. You will need to support them at times, and at other times you will have to rely on them. You will still not like them. Community isn't about like.

Juneteenth is a good day to remind people that slavery was a founding principle of the US economy. WALL STREET started as a slave market, FANEUIL HALL hosted a slave market & is named for a slave trader. All of the first 12 US Presidents owned slaves except John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

The first commodities traded on Wall Street were slaves. A very short history of the Wall Street Slave Market. The name "Wall St" derives from either Dutch "Walloon" settlers or the literal 9 ft defensive wall along the East River. Dutch settlers labeled it "de Waalstraat".

When I taught 7th grade science in 2014 I had a few weeds dedicated to teaching students about climate change using computer stimulation and documentaries … the public’s denial certainly isn’t the scientists’ problem.

reading criticism of nyt opinion and newsletters is so boring, if the piece sucks just don't share it. there are so many good pieces that we could spend our time on instead :)

Complaining about the state of things while doing nothing to fix it is my biggest pet peeve.

So much cynicism masquerading as activism. I don't have time for it.

I find that women and gender nonconforming people disproportionately apologize for having to charge people for what they produce. DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR THIS. STOP. You aren't forcing anyone to do anything and there is a cost to whatever it is that you are producing as an offering.

For me, I write like I speak and hope my grandma and friends will read my work. They won’t if it’s boring and confusing.

This week, graduate students in my course are learning how to write about science for the non-expert public. For those of you who do this professionally, what tips would you offer?

Reskeeting since I’ve been trying to think of breakout group activities to integrate these concepts under white Christian nationalism.

I’m prepping my lesson for the religious oppression class. I am trying to figure out an activity to connect the rise in white nationalism to the genocide in Gaza and the increase in hate crimes among LGBTQ+ orgs, groups, and individuals. Does anyone have any materials to share?
