The key to me is that we should be pushing as a united front for states/cities to limit AV as much as possible to regulated fleet operations. IMO we should embrace companies that are trying to be responsible (Waymo) and be united in rejecting Tesla's approach.

I think most urbanists don't have the technical background to appreciate the difference between Waymo and Tesla's approaches (much less likely Waymo vs. Cruise). Getting upset about Waymos honking in a parking lot is missing the plot.
Avatar
I think the more urbanists dismiss and avoid engaging with the technology and operators the more likely we get the worst outcomes.

Ok but that’s not so much the point of this?

A group of rail, transit, and urbanist advocates are organizing a Zoom call this Thursday at 4pm PT in support of the Harris-Walz ticket. Will you join us? RSVP: tinyurl.com/trainlovers4hw

You reference stories of self-driving cars injuring people with no accountability. To your knowledge are any of these Waymos? FWIW I'm not trying to fight about any of this, just curious about how people feel about this and why and whether they differentiate between different types of AV.
Avatar
And do you own a car yourself?
Avatar
And do you dislike them? I don't ride scooters but I also think they're fine for other people.

A poll about Waymo. Please reply with your opinion of Waymo (specifically) and whether you own your own car or not. Optionally whether you've been in one. I haven't owned a car since 2008 and I like Waymo just fine and I've been in them twice. Please repost for a wider audience after you answer.

The thing is, this can and presumably WILL be fixed because Waymo is a company that wants to do business in SF. Compare that to the street takeovers in cities all over. Or that guy terrorizing Seattle in his dodge charger. I will take robots over human drivers every day.
Avatar
I’d rather watch a Waymo spend 10 minutes trying to safely make a 3-point turn than have some jackass smash his car into my living room at 120mph.
Avatar
Agreed. Personally owned autonomous vehicles should be banned. Fleets run by well regulated and “responsible” companies have tremendous potential. Taking a hardline position takes urbanists out of the conversations they’re needed in the most.
Avatar
And I’m as deep in the war on cars as anybody.

As bad as this deal is, and it is bad, the Aldermanic system makes it so much worse. Chicago could do plenty with its curbs but politically expanding meter zones is a no-go unless the local powerbroker agrees.

Is it just me or does the MPact Mobility conference (formerly the better named Rail~volution) have ZERO parking policy sessions? 🙄. #urbanplanning #urbanism #TOD #parking #sustainability

There is too much parking.
In 5 or less words, start a fight not about religion or politics: Pineapples don't belong on pizza.

Just pointing out that reliance on individual car parking is inherently unsuited to providing equitable and universal access because cars take up a lot of space and private car storage is probably the worst use of public curbs - especially if it’s cheap or free.

How many 40 week pregnant women can park in front of the clinic at the same time?

@cait.bsky.social I just rode the train with someone who works in a cemetery and your posts were helpful in having a good conversation!

I’m just exhausted every day after seeing BS posts on every platform — many of them well meaning — be they made up “fun facts” or regurgitated misinformation. Almost no one cares if what they say is true. It’s a fools errand to try to correct anything. What to do? 😕

Shoulda tried harder on parking reform tho.

Functional and sustainable cities should have childcare available in all neighborhoods. If you can’t place services for the very less fortunate anywhere near childcare then you either can’t have childcare or you can’t have services.
Avatar
And, as we all should know, the biggest threats to these kids are all the fucking cars in the city.
