A question scholars of authoritarianism always ask is "how did otherwise normal people come to support a political movement that was so destructive & went against many of the values they claimed to hold?" It is, IMO, a very relevant question for our times. sethcotlar.substack.com/p/normal-peo...

A 1976 Honda Civic was my first car. It weighed about 1,500 lbs. Most cars today weigh at least twice that, and electric cars, with their heavy batteries, weigh even more. The Tesla CyberTruck weighs nearly 6,000 lbs. www.thedrive.com/new-cars/197...

Institutions work until they don’t. It’s banal but true. Courts as institutions worked when Trump tried to steal the election, but FedSoc has been chipping away at them for decades, and I think it is very rational to doubt they will work any more to restrain an executive.
WSJ this morning. lol at the last bit. "Leaders on both sides need to stop describing the stakes of the election in apocalyptic terms. Democracy won't end if one or the other candidate is elected. Fascism is not aborning if Mr. Trump wins, unless you have little faith in American institutions."
“Pro-Trump Christian extremists use scripture to justify violent goals” Modern Christianity is an oxymoron.

I have been working on this for the past two months, after growing increasingly concerned about the influence this industry is trying to exert. Did you know crypto companies have spent more this cycle than the oil or pharmaceutical industries, despite being a small fraction of the size?

Also - Dear furry tech people: Heritage is run by people who are connected and well-resourced, although not necessarily all that sharp. So please remember that even if nothing else you did or know about is remotely illegal, it's a felony to lie to the feds and every day is STFU Friday, m'kay?
I'll bet beer money that any IP evidence from this hack traces back to the public wifi at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

/2 Naturally Bill Maher loves it. You could set Bill Maher’s dick on fire with a crème brûlée torch and he’d think it was hilarious if you told him it was mocking liberals. The funniest part of this is conservative people will miserably and devoid of joy watch it, suffering to own the libs.

And if you don’t exactly know what you want, say what you’re enthusiastic about. When you’re open about what you love, your people can find you. If you haven’t made a lot of stuff yet, being full of enthusiasm (and ideally knowledge about your enthusiasms) will give a good signal of who you are.
If there were one piece of advice which I would give to a young person that I think is applicable to every career (and other parts of life) it would be: You have to say what you want, out loud. No one can see inside your head. If you want to do a job or get into an area, you need to say so.
A month later, this is still my sense, except Dobbs may hurt him a little more and his criming a bit less. Maybe better to focus on the swing states of AZ, NV, GA, MI, and WI, but FL has abortion rights on the ballot and that cd push they’re local races more purple.
My gut is telling me 1. Trump’s J6 criming will cost him 3-5 points vs 2020, and 5-7 points if he’s convicted again 2. Dobbs will cost him 1-2 pts; more in states with abortion on the ballot 3. Yet he’ll pick up 1-2 points because Biden’s old, inflation isn’t forgotten, and Covid *is* forgotten

We need fewer Democrat appointees with a stick up there. I mean, would you have a beer with this guy? He’ll tell you how inspirational Tipper Gore was to him when growing up.
Today’s suggestion by the Surgeon General that online speech be labeled as dangerous is extraordinary, and puts him in the same category as censorious public officials like Anthony Comstock.

/2 The argument FOR the regulatory state is more or less a confession of the failure of American politics: if you relied on Congress, women would still be taking Thalidomide for morning sickness, because there’s no democratic consensus for health and safety regulation.
