There’s a bookstore in my town in SW Virginia with an entire shelf devoted to how much JD Vance sucks and doesn’t speak for Appalachia, which I’ve always had the sense is a somewhat bipartisan consensus out here, so I confess I am curious to see how that ends up playing.

The central role of attorneys in the ongoing effort to end democracy exposes such a deep rot in the legal system, and, for that matter, really shows that the 'character and fitness' hoops we jump through to get admitted to the bar are not actually screening out shittyshits at all
While the Democratic Party decides which presidential candidate has the best chance to defeat Trump, the Republican Party focuses on making sure that the election doesn't matter. Plan accordingly. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/u...
Unbowed by Jan. 6 Charges, Republicans Pursue Plans to Contest a Trump Defeatwww.nytimes.com Mr. Trump’s allies are preparing to try to short-circuit the election system, if he does not win.

Lost in the ongoing Trumpapalooza is the excellent news that a malaria vaccination developed at Oxford Univ. over the last 30 years and costing only £3 per shot is being unrolled in malaria-prone countries. If it fulfills its promise, this will make an enormous difference to so many lives.

DAs often face little accountability. Take Mississippi's Doug Evans: Over 26 years, his team routinely struck Black people from juries—a pattern exposed in the case of Curtis Flowers, who he tried 6 times. He faced no discipline, retired on his own terms. boltsmag.org/mississippi-...
Mississippi DA, Exposed for Striking Black Jurors, Leaves His Office On His Own Termsboltsmag.org When the Supreme Court struck down Curtis Flowers’ conviction, it sparked lawsuits, bills, and calls for oversight. But DA Doug Evans is getting to walk away with no accountability.

I love this. The Post clearly called an NY bureau FBI guy or a Secret Service dude who wasn't there to ask what's up and he was like "oh he's a Chinese guy" and they just ran it.
Terrifying journalistic bullshit from @nypost, which posted an article claiming that the shooter was a “Chinese man” (thanks @paulayoo for grabbing), then replaced it with a version that the shooter was “identified only as a white male” shortly thereafter — WITHOUT flagging the correction.

Saw “Fatherland,” a four-actor play based entirely on testimony and records from a January 6 case, about a son who turns his father in to the FBI. Tiny tiny theater. Extremely powerful and masterfully acted. It’s going to NY; catch it there if you can.

If a Democrat had been the target of an assassination attempt, can anyone plausibly imagine a Trump statement that did not denigrate and equivocate?

Just going to continue to say it's impossible to take in the scale of bullshit in the world at this time. No one should try because it's simply not possible. Attention is a limited, non-renewable resource. I feel no guilt for focusing on a few things so that I can make a small impact on those.

It cannot be stressed enough that adjusting the size of the Supreme Court in the 19th c. was a serious solution to serious concerns about how the Court functioned. As @earlymodjustice.bsky.social points out, reform often addressed imbalances. And these imbalances were often about REPRESENTATION. 1/
Seven times between 1801 and 1869 Congress changed the size of the court, going from a low of five justices in 1801 to a high of ten in 1863. In most of those cases, as in 1801 and 1863, the size went up and down in order to fix an imbalance or overreach by the Supreme Court. My latest
