The UK and France just proved that getting out and actually voting makes a difference. Don’t let anyone ever tell you differently.

the amount of folx who think that the solution to bias in gen AI/big techs lack of quality data is to mobilise the public to crowdsource quality, labelled training data is astounding. often with no acknowledgement or mention of how this is extractive labour, all for the benefit of tech monopolies

We’ve returned to the olden days, when word-of-mouth was the only real way to advertise. As an author, if you enjoy a book, please: tell your friends. Your group chat, your sewing circle, your family WhatsApp, your work Slack, the voice channel of your MMORPG guild, anything.
Hey, so. I understand that this is anecdotal and not research, but. It is WILD how useless social media has become for promo. It's a fucking disgrace, really.

“OpenAI breach is a reminder that AI companies are treasure troves for hackers | TechCrunch” techcrunch.com/2024/07/05/o... This is, what, the third or fourth OpenAI security incident in less than two years? This is the sort of clown car you get if you're all-in on using LLMs for coding.

Remember when some of y'all got real mad at me for doing some back-of-the-napkin math about how much water "AI" likely uses, in light of the fact that they refuse to release their actual numbers? Anyway.
Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

One day we will learn to distinguish between "technical skills" and "using technology" but it is not this day
My son's grade school has a "tech literacy" class that taught the kids to look things up on google and chatgpt.

Like remembering that before unions, a lot of folks worked 6 or 7 days a week, it's worth remembering that before environmental movements, the air and water in a lot of places were fucking gross. Left to their own devices, companies just straight-up poisoned people. They will again if we let them.
It's worth googling the Great Smog of London to see how far we've come. Images like this from the 1950s. It was caused in part from burning coal

Every "that isn't the real problem—you're a fool for believing it is—this other thing is the TRUE underlying problem" thought piece fails to understand that you can tackle problems on more than one front at a time. When the problem is a big one, you have an obligation to attack it on all fronts

Continuing with my weird fascination of how AI intersects with searches about TV shows, this AI summary describes an episode that is literally one where Ncuti stands on a landmine the whole show as an episode that doesn't feature him.

Francie is here with a BLEP vs. MLEM tutorial. A blep is when the tongue is just hanging out at rest, stationary. Mlem is an action word for when the tongue is performing a licking motion - hence the name which is an onomatopoetic interpretation of the sound it makes.
