1. The guy who wrote the "don't vote" essay says we're obligated as Americans to root for the Michigan Wolverines www.nytimes.com/2022/12/08/o... 2. he lives in 3 Rivers, MI & says your vote doesn't matter "even in municipal races." I found EIGHT elections in the past 10y decided by 1 vote there

Someone should foia his qualified voter file to see if he actually hasn’t voted since he stated publishing this screed back in 2018.

Aren’t their fact checkers supposed to verify this before they post?

It's long been clear that they don't fact-check editorials.

...the aristocrats! But it's anthropocene.

The 'geniuses' at The New York Times are too busy churning out anti-Biden slop to actually vet anyone they publish. They are unfit to do journalism and should all step down (for the good of the country).

For the people who may be wondering if there's another Matthew Walther in Michigan this could be... The address is in Three Rivers, and he's posted about living there. x.com/matthewwalth...

That bio also has the link to his Catholic magazine The Lamp that’s mentioned in his NYT bio. It’s 100% the same guy.
Avatar
Walther was born in 1990. If that's him, he has not aged well at all.

A life filled with bitterness because you can't control other people's lives will do that.

The same guy in the pictures.

Born at home and blue-eyed blonde, just like the good Lord intended. Amirite??

Join me in corresponding with the Times. [email protected] is the only way to request a correction or retraction for such egregious lying in print.
Avatar
Correction (I own that I made a copy error above). That's the only way to request a correction on the opinion side. News has their own process. FTR I do not for one second buy that the Times, esp. Times Opinion, has any commitment to ethics at all.

As for previous elections: according to his bio on the Washington Free Beacon he used to live in Virginia, where state law is very protective of voter registration info.
Avatar
Registered to vote on Election Day, which I didn’t realize was possible in Michigan.
Avatar
yes, it's one of many wonderful things they have there in Michigan, albeit, they have way too many elections overall
Avatar
Yeah, I’m voting in like my 3rd local primary this august.

Confessions of an ex-votertheweek.com Why I don't vote
Avatar
He literally sounds like he votes quite a bit more than average.
Avatar
"Things were better when the Kings and Priests were in charge of everything" is certainly a viewpoint. Not sure why he deserves an op ed in the NYT, though.

why must I share this fanbase with the Worst Fucking People Alive

As a Michigan Tech alum, let me say I am not surprised by any of this.

Seriously... the Hitler hairdo and 'stache? That goes way beyond how much of a douchebag I thought he was already....

As a Michigander, and a Spartan fan since birth, I extend my hand in friendship. Sparty won't, he's still disappointed....😉

Just chiming in as an actual person from Three Rivers to say: fuck this loser
Avatar
I can’t believe this guy is a conservative Southwest Michigan Catholic who isn’t a big old Domer.
Avatar
it's an incredible insight into how powerful the Big Blue cult is in southern michigan!
Avatar
Oh, Geoff, don't get me started, lol...I have friends I adore who studied there or now work there but, yeahhhhh
Avatar
The delegation from Sturgis concurs.
Avatar
Three Rivers and Sturgis agree? TAKE NOTICE, PEOPLE, THIS NEVER HAPPENS
Avatar
My initial reaction on finding out he's from TR was "*sigh* of course he is."
Avatar
Avatar
Yes!!! As a fellow Michigander, and someone who's been to Three Rivers, I second that!!!

this isn't a defense of umich but a very funny additional note on walther bsky.app/profile/acea...
i'm so sorry for linking to this school's newspaper but walther seems to have gone far out of his way to not mention where he went to college and he's "not sure" if he graduated hillsdalecollegian.com/2023/03/qa-m...

In Virginia, the majority party in the legislature was decided by coin toss. One of our current elections is heading for a run-off. Every vote counts and anyone who does not vote does not deserve the benefits of citizenship. www.washingtonpost.com/news/politic...
Analysis | That coin-toss election in Virginia? Dramatic. But it pales in comparison to other historic contests.www.washingtonpost.com A brief history of exceptionally close contests.

It's time for people to tune out that paper's editorial side entirely, if not the whole paper. But publishing things like this is the clearest sign yet for me that the opinion editors feel that they're just fin de siècle chroniclers and that the country they lived in will end, or even must end.

the whole paper. I follow Jamelle Bouie on here, but I haven't given a time to that rag in years. only just now unsubbed WaPo though. alas.
