People say scientists are serious but marine biologists will spend hours quietly sitting around tables drawing on styrofoam cups and then tying said cups to deep sea submarines Because ocean pressure will squeeze the air from the cups And we are but human & we want tiny cup

We are "stuck in a digital monoculture, where decades of anti-competitive practices have created it so that just one system is responsible for so much of what we rely on from everything from airlines to hospitals to schools," EFF’s Rory Mir told Mashable.

I'm going to start with this: "Sometimes we are blessed with being able to choose the time, and the arena, and the manner of our revolution, but more usually we must do battle where we are standing." - Audre Lorde, "Sister Outsider and Other Essays"

In 2017 not long after Trump took office I interviewed this researcher about a chunk of ice falling off in antarctica. I talked to this researcher about HOW we were able to do it and this bit sticks out in my mind

Imagine looking at one million acres of land and pristine fresh water, with no motor vehicles, no development, one of only 13 dark sky sanctuaries in the world and saying…this should be a mine.
Very unfun fact: Project 2025 specifically names Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area and wants to remove its protected status and open it up to mining. This is the future Donald John Trump wants.

Here's a toxic fallacy that I'd like to see dismantled: that genius is rare. That it must be protected at all costs. That it must be allowed to misbehave because the misbehavior is tied to genius in some fundamental way that none of us can understand because we are not geniuses. WRONG.

may just turn out that the general background violence of a society that has "garden variety school shootings" turns out to be plenty of explanation all on its own

My colleagues & I have studied the social media aftermath of mass shooting events for a decade. We’re still processing the horrifying, abhorrent, and tragic event yesterday, which appears to be an assassination attempt on former President Trump. In case they're useful, here are some first thoughts:

I hope everyone takes care. These are difficult times. We need as many people as possible to be focused and to be engaged in action where they are and within their capacity. Be ruthless in cutting out lots of noise and also letting go of what is not in your control.

Montreal's sponge parks, designed in a way to deviate as much rain water as possible away from the sewers, have saved a bunch of areas from flooding due to Beryl's rainfall. So you get really nice parks in a major city, with a bonus against flooding. They're making more of them now and I love it
Montreal sponge parks soak up the stormmontreal.ctvnews.ca After over 100 millimetres of rain pummelled Montreal Wednesday evening, some Montreal streets saw less flooding, and sponge parks played a big part in soaking up the precipitation.

Some seem to get mad at the wrong people on purpose. It means they don't have to actually fight against those with power. Punching down or laterally can feel like catharsis.

Spotted this 1945 view in the Hennepin Co. Library archive. Cool details. Seeing the location, I realized it’s a familiar spot but the view isn’t. It’s 4th/Franklin, facing east. Buildings foreground stood where the bridge over I-35 is. In this spot now, you’d look right and see Electric Fetus. 1/2

PWHL should release the third party report on Minnesota leadership. This whole situation is ridiculous and from what all I can tell they fired the wrong people. Transparency, thanks, please.

I lessened my stress years ago when I stopped arguing with white people about whether certain things emerged due to racist INTENT rather than whether those things were put to racist USE. I don't care about the intent but I do certainly care about USE.

Extreme heat affects us all, but it doesn't affect us all equally. In Phoenix, legislation was just passed THIS YEAR, prohibiting landlords from preventing low-income mobile home residents from installing cooling shades & AC units because it "looked bad". More: www.talkingclimate.ca/p/heat-can-k...
NASA map shows temperatures up to 160 degrees on Phoenix streets, sidewalkswww.kjzz.org Data from June 19, when the daily high was 106 degrees, shows asphalt across the city that day was between 120 and 160 degrees.

Ftr I don't know what the best move for the Dems is re: Biden stepping down, and they don't care what people like me think anyway. I am focused on what I know how to do and what I believe we should all be doing with our political energy right now.

Something that's clear and very helpful to keep in mind is that I have ZERO influence over what will happen re: who the Democratic nominee will be at the August convention. So I'm going to keep it moving and focus on what I can influence.

And that's why I always say: "we need more people." I never forgot that lesson. My dad was right about appreciating the people who do show up even if it's one person and also about being less self-involved so that you can appreciate what is actually right in front of you.
