The memo is idiotic, but the piece, produced by @semaforben.bsky.social's games'n'gossip site, is a grotesquerie. It starts with the Dems "convuls[ng]" over Biden's "fitness," as if it were received wisdom. Worse: the memo is from a Georgetown prof and a VC, vaguely presented as "well-connected."
what the fuck is this sorkin-brain shit?

Threads, that hotbed of “partisan” loons.
Wow. @nytimes.com has closed their Threads account and left the platform after days of getting just shredded in the replies for their handling of Biden post debate. Now they're getting dog piled on Instagram for running from Threads.

You think your college degree is somehow better than my degrees from the College of Hard Knocks and the University of Life? Their just as good of schools. You think your better than me, Mr Elitist in your ivory tower with your so-called “science?” Well, I think your a bias looser.

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.
This!! Start with “they want to end no fault divorce, sell national parks, and ban porn” end with tax structure.

When every single national media outlet is speaking in lockstep with Republican talking points about a candidate for president, that is a fundamental, societal level problem with bad implications for the future of democracy in the US. That people discount that is deeply disappointing.
I focus 90% of my criticism on media ethics and leadership because that is the foundation of how we establish a shared reality. Writing off media effects as immaterial or irrelevant, as if people form opinions about events outside their personal experience without mediation, is deeply ignorant.

Michelle Wolf on the media & Trump @ 2018 WHCD. Nothing has changed in six years. "We’ve got our friends at CNN here. Welcome, guys, it’s great to have you. You guys love breaking news, and you did it, you broke it... You helped create this monster, and now you’re profiting off of him."
Wonder what Michelle Wolf said to make everyone so mad? Read it here.www.vox.com “What would I do without Megyn Kelly? Probably be more proud of women.”

Jesus. I never thought of it in these particular terms, this explicitly, but yeah, this is depressingly accurate. It's just how a self-doubting, fearful person who wants to *appear* as savvy, powerful, and courageous would behave.
For NYT/WaPo/NBC political reporters, it appears to them as “wow I wrote this story about Biden, and look at all the attention it’s getting, and the White House is responding!” Which doesn’t happen for Trump stories. Which is another way of saying that it’s about their power to act.

Your periodic reminder that the documents case might involve the worst crimes of all. Yes, even worse than the subversion cases. It might *be* a subversion case, and the crimes might be far worse than fake electors, Jan. 6, etc. (which of course are very serious crimes). We just don't know.

The banality of evil is that it's just some real easy schtick for guys who've got nothing else.
As a side note, this is John McEntee, Trump's Director of White House Personnel and the primary architect of Project 2025. On Tik Tok he said he gives counterfeit bills to homeless people so they will be arrested when they go to spend them.

Do any of the people managing news outlets that are struggling (basically all of them) while at the same time churning out ridiculous, inane, toxic (and yet often very dull) news stories and opinion pieces ever put those two factors together?

It's too bad for the many good journalists who work on beats other than the politics desks or for the opinion sections. But I think the whole edifice has to crumble before we can really start replacing it with good, honest, competent journalists.

Note how he speaks in complete sentences and is entirely cogent. Going by the people whose only job is informing us, this should read "Pffftthhh. Bolssobon. Hantpus glom." I guess they got this one wrong.
"Trump said your jobs would come back. Well, he created jobs at a 3.4% rate & my administration has created them at a 6.5% rate. Meanwhile he cut taxes for his rich friends. Trump's a corrupt billionaire who inherited hundreds of millions from his dad. He doesn't know or care about people like you."

I hereby apologize to every goofball who declared, even after his indictments, that Trump would get away with his crimes. They were still goofballs because they weren't basing their assertions on anything but gut feelings. But they were at least partly right.
if stealing classified docs and lying about it while no longer in office is an "official act", we are well and truly cooked

This is the top of Washington Post right now. Yesterday, Donald Trump pretended to disown a plan written by his top supporters, most of them former staffers, to mount a fascist takeover of the United States. It's presented on the side of the page in milquetoast language. Catastrophic dysfunction.

What I don't get about the (at least seemingly) smart, decent people who continue to write for outlets like the Atlantic or the NYT and WaPo opinion pages: what good mechanic would want to work for, and be associated with, an auto shop known for pouring maple syrup into people's crankcases?

Conservatives spent 50 years building: grabbing school board seats, state legislatures, etc. Creating "think tanks," building a media infrastructure. The American left, meanwhile, got Twitter accounts and tried to win the presidency with zero support in government. Now, they're not even doing that.
I just don’t get what the “I can’t bring myself to vote for Biden” people think will happen if their plan comes to fruition. None of them seem to care about The Revolution beyond abstraction, much less have an alternative system to promote. I don’t even see leftists advocating for the Green Party!

Add "journalism school" to the things and people that for years I refrained from criticizing too harshly, only to have the proof of their badness drop on us all like bombs. J-schools vary, but a lot of this "impartiality" crap, as well as the horserace stuff and the gossip, etc., comes from them.

Here's how bad the NYT has gotten: The other day, Tom Friedman called on Biden to step down, and I heard nothing about it, I guess because they were doing so much horrendous shit it didn't even rate.

Never Forget. Full disclosure: I went to work for Wired the year after they published this, and while I thought it was dumb, I wasn't outright appalled. Of course, I should have been (and I was a year or two later).
