there are many reasons we need to win in the fall, but one of them is that i simply am not going to abide by letting both the brits and the french lecture us
*MACRON'S GROUP PROJECTED TO WIN MORE SEATS THAN FAR RIGHT *LEFT ALLIANCE SET FOR 170-215 SEATS IN FRENCH VOTE: ESTIMATES *LE PEN'S GROUP SET FOR 110-158 SEATS IN FRENCH VOTE: ESTIMATES *FRENCH LEFT SET FOR SHOCK ELECTION VICTORY, PROJECTIONS SHOW

american smugness to our friends and neighbors across the ocean simply must not be compromised again

We can't expect another Brexit to spare us shame

I think we already gave that up by not jailing Trump for J6. Even Sunak was taking shots at us about a peaceful transfer of power.

Believe me, normal people in the UK are far from smug about the US. We want you to thrive and be a happy and healthy nation - and the only way for you to do that, imho, is for the orange felon not to return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Right. If I can't make French white flag jokes and British revolutionary war failure jokes, what do I have left.

But what about our ”time for the europeans to storm the beach” jokes?

It's okay, we're used to you arriving late for the war. This'll be three for three.

Arrive late, but then the Allies win.✊

I'm fine with us getting there late as long as we get there.

I'm not saying the French political system is all sunshine and roses (lol no) but my whole adult life I've been envying their two-round election system
Avatar
“are you sure this is what you really want?” is probably a useful failsafe for electoral systems
Avatar
also useful if you're going to propose some kind of nation ruining referendum,,, say a brexit type deal

We gotta make it so that we have two elections a week apart and you gotta win both to be elected. If nobody does you keep running elections until somebody wins two in a row, like a tennis match
Avatar
This was one of the (vague, stupid) notions behind our Electoral College, but of course that was all dead on arrival.
Avatar
Me too, everytime it looks like a catastrophic political disaster is happening, everyone looks at the results of round one & fights like hell to stop it. Us Brits could have really done with this over Brexit.
Avatar
Also enjoyable from a us perspective? Not having a shitty 4 year long round of endless presidential campaigning.

Two countries have now stared into the abyss & turned away. Time for a third

But Macron, and Starmer, together, are still younger than Biden!
Avatar
It's obviously absurd to expect the country to rally around a man who is 10,000 years old
Avatar
How could we simply reject the darkness? Obviously there are no reasons to vote for Biden of we are uncertain about his ability to work 16 hours a day, 6 days week for the next 4 and a half years.
Avatar
Unless Macron is 20, that isn't true
Avatar
It's true in a narrative kind of way, which is all that matters.

I watched the debate. He looked 100.

Imagine me. Married to a French dual citizen. Who gets to claim saving democracy in both places.

Just one thing. Macron does not deserve any credit: bsky.app/profile/tani...
Explosive reporting in Le Monde confirms what was apparent all week: Macron resisted the emergence of anti-far-right front after round 1. His PM, Attal, forced it as a fait accompli, & pressured for drop outs to block RN. Even then, Macron made some phone calls to undercut it.

doesn’t matter in the short term

That's fine, but I put that up as I dislike the framing by the OP that Macron's the one who deserves the credit (when it's his PM, Attal, who does). Macron himself has burned a lot of support in his own party.

The US press and media seems way more complicit helping Trump than they are in France or the UK. Like Farage has some insane tabloids on his side but its not UK mainstream stuff. Even they tipidly endorse Starmer like 5 seconds before the election
