Important to note that the state has already been censoring professors for years in Florida. Now, they just want to formalize the process. My field, public policy and administration, would be impossible to teach under these conditions. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/an-assault...

If you put in "Florida higher education" in "The Free Press" you would have zero idea that the state has passed laws that censor speech there. And why would you. Weiss et al provided the script for the Stop Woke Act.

I’m curious what their explanation is. Is it just “all these orgs are woke” or is it “the government shouldn’t support the arts”?

I think that Art Basel Miami should change location.

The charitable explanation (?) is probably how conservatives internalized the "Piss Christ" and line of cases about arts, which I'm even now having a hard time buying as I type. Still doesn't make it less dumb and less authoritarian.

It's wild that she doesn't have a sense of shame for this blatant erasure of reality

Why would she have a sense of shame about it? She knows what she’s doing.

bingo, cancelling critics of Israel at Columbia is the only reason Bari has a career, it was never about any principle for her other than right-wing grievance mongering

You're probably right. Naive to think she didn't start out in bad faith

Doesn't it depend on the contract's wording signed by the full-time staff? Contracts are everything. Also, isn't it illegal for an employer or anyone else to attempt to prevent a witness of fact from testifying under a subpoena? Florida needs to focus and vote these fascists out!!
Avatar
All of that should be irrelevant as these laws are prevented by the Constitution. Of course Republicans have shown they have no interest in upholding the Constitution.
Avatar
And voting doesn't work when they've gerrymandered and Jim Crowed their way to unshakeable control.

Sure. Evil's another trait for many. It's not stupid to make an objectively dumb pitch to judges who are corrupt or stupid themselves.

They flat out don't think the 1st amendment applies in Florida.

I presume Bari will be all over this

Small government, you say …

Conservatives love "cancel culture", it's a cornerstone of their cult, they were mad because they thought the Good People (white, racist, cishet conservatives) were getting canceled by the Wrong People (everyone else)

I would love to see the clause in the faculty employment contract which purports to negate the First Amendment.

Cancel for thee, but not for

Don, talking about DeSantis, look a this whistleblower suit filled by a former top law enforcement official against DeSantis. Looks like DeSantis was weaponizing law enforcement (government), to further his campaign. This should be a big story. www.politico.com/newsletters/...

When the Fuhrer speaks in FL. Best to cower. Free speech with the Trumpist Party is nonexistent.

Florida is simply no longer part of the United States. We should start treating them accordingly along with Texas. Want federal dollars to fix up the joint after a hurricane or something? Restore rights, first, and the we’ll see how feel about it.
Avatar
It shows their lack of integrity, landing in the contradiction of censoring in order to stop censorship.

The party of "free speech" hates actual free speech. In other news, grass is green.
Avatar
The party of “small government” and “don’t tread on me”, amazin
Avatar
The fact that these things continue to escalate showcases the reality that we don't have a political party willing/able to counter this.

This just in, Florida hates Constitution.

It’s all economic immolation in order to maintain or extend conservative cultural dominance, which does not work out. These guys suck at running things and the people of Florida pay the price.
Avatar
The cancel culture panic was always a demand for power and privilege to be protected from criticism or challenge. Censorship was always the only way to achieve it.

It’s gospel in Texas.

No FL sigh. That is entirely the point of the 1A, to stop govt ending dissent against them.

“A measure of dissent is essential” to university education.

I find this whole “cancel culture” argument hypocritical, since it’s being raised by people who never ask for, much less respect, other points of view. Growing up in Kentucky, I saw right wing people “cancel” others many times. They just didn’t call it that.
