Important to remember risks to democracy are complex - for instance, state-level backsliding can be aided or accelerated by what happens at the federal level

So let's see. They took over Q with Qanon. Emerald clown took X. W was stolen decades ago. K sorta problematic for over a century. Now they're taking J and D? Screw these guys, stealing the alphabet!

None of this would have happened if everyone at the rally had been armed, right? I mean, that's what the gun nuts say: the more arms, the safer everyone is.

Exactly. The Dems could be putting R's in the position to be in an awkward spot, but they likely won't. And if a few do (AOC comes to mind and a few others), Dems are more likely to push those folks to tamp down criticism.

Why do you think they're so rabid to make abortion (and by collary, essentially miscarriage) and birth control illegal, yet child labor legal? Jail lots of women, seize their kids to put into "foster care", and force both to work.

I feel like I need to go listen to a Ted Talk by the woman who came up with Crispr-cas9 gene editing to cleanse my brain after reading that stupid headline from The Atlantic. (Dr. Jennifer Doudna is the scientist and bioethicist, if you really want to dig in)
what the fuck are they even doing over there at this point

/8 At any rate, congratulations to the Federalist Society for an achievement beyond the reach of the British, outside the grasp of bloody civil war, impossible to Nazis and Soviets and terrorists: defeating the American idea.

Never mind that if Trump wins then he could just...nuke places. Or get that country's leader to acquiesce to his demands in order to avoid being nuked. The dude is uninterested in upholding alliances and agreements but very interested in power and retribution.

I don't understand the immunity case. Can Biden just, like, nationalize Twitter (or whatever other social media site) under the guise of "national security"? Seize Mar-A-Lago? Throw certain members of Congress who visited Moscow on a July 4 a few years ago in Gitmo? Etc.

He's right. They're stealing the country from us and ending democracy. "Bloodless if the left allows it to be" is a threat to kill anyone who fights back

Definitely had a vision of Biden arranging a meeting with John Roberts, holding a knife to Roberts' neck, and saying "this is totally legal thanks to you, assh*le! What fun!"

Yeah there was a lot of chaos for a long time. Eventually they got to democracy which was lost here and there. Versus, say, the Bolshevik Revolution which basically had some form of dictator for over a century since with no end in sight.

She appears unaware the giant uptick post-Roe in people, especially those with uteruses, getting permanently sterilized on purpose and often at great personal expense. Not every protest is people with handcrafted signs yelling for 2 hours in a carefully corralled area.

Going public with an experience like this is life-altering for a woman, so when you read these stories remember both the extraordinary amount of courage involved and also the likelihood that there are many others you’ll never hear.

One of the big problems with western society, especially the USA, is that doing the right thing ethically and making a lot of money usually involve opposite actions. And this week SCOTUS made that even more true.

As a non-historian, I kind of wonder how likely eg North Korea or Turkmenistan is, versus French Revolution. In fact, a revolution with a decent outcome seems more of a fluke than many many examples of authoritarian dictatorships lasting decades or even centuries.

Also can't use infrared at night if it stays near or above body temperature, or dogs if it's too hot because dogs are more sensitive to heat than human beings.

I totally agree! I just wish the responsibility were shared more equally and hope that more people who can get pregnant will insist that the people who can make them pregnant step up.

A reminder that people who can get pregnant having the type of intercourse that can make them so should be asking for funds from their partners that can make them pregnant. It really isn't fair for one person to shoulder this when the other person is the one adding risk.

59 years ago today, Griswold v. Connecticut guaranteed the right to birth control. Justice Thomas says the Supreme Court should "reconsider" that ruling. And this week, 38 GOP senators voted against the Right to Contraception Act. Republicans are coming for birth control.
