Was working on a text and laboriously typed "Siouxsie and the Banshees" only to watch helplessly as autocorrect changed "Siouxsie" to "Susie" and all of a sudden I want to burn all of Silicon Valley to the ground. That's not an overreaction is it?
Avatar
No, this is correct, set it all on fire.

I want my phone to autocorrect "Susie" to "Siouxsie" instead.

The autocorrect has gotten so stupid and dumb that I recently turned it off in Chrome. I do think it's gotten more aggressive lately. Also I'm more aggressive lately.
Avatar
it's like a really stupid person grabbing the levers of your old-style typewriter as you work and actively interfering with what you're doing. I could scream sometimes.

this is why first thing I do when installing a writing software is to disable autocorrect^^.

Nah. Perfectly reasonable. Autocorrect used to be a cute drunk elf. Now, it’s a bite-sized terrorist driving us to the brink.

I especially love when my iphone autocorrects a word to something I don’t want, I backspace and correct it, and it…autocorrects me again. I want to throw the phone thru a window when that happens.
They sell more iPhones that way.

What we all needed in this world is something else trying to tell is what we really want is not what we asked for.
Avatar
We should have drowned autocorrect in a bathtub when it was only changing fucking to ducking. Now it’s grown too large and we may have to unleash Gojiro. Which autocorrect just tried to change to Gomez.
Avatar
My phone automatically capitalises TARDIS so it’s not all bad.

Mine can spell complicated international sports names. Even when I’m not using them.

I have matches you can borrow.

wanting their ci-iity to lieeee in dust might be an overreaction for a few other bands, but not this one
Avatar
Cities (Silicon Valley) in dust
Avatar
Sure puts their AI in perspective too... because I'm sure there are no references to Siouxsie on the web... Autocorrect was a a warning about these end times we failed to heed.
Avatar
Turn off autocorrect and autosuggest and remove that source of angst from your life. As a bonus it doesn't take long to re-learn how to spell, and it's a trip down memory lane having to remember things like "i before e except after c but only on days ending in y".

Avatar
You're duckin-A right it's not an overreaction.
Avatar
Try having multiple languages enabled. Autocorrect on steroids.
Avatar
That is a completely understandable reaction. At least in my world.
Avatar
The LLM powered Google keyboard autocorrect is so powerfully bad, it always tries to second guess me and makes me retype words I have typed out correctly as it will straight up change them after I've typed. I tried turning it off entirely and it made my typing a lot slower.
Avatar
shit like this fills me with so much rage!
Avatar
I feel like people don’t talk enough abt autocorrect impacting writing and language. I write regularly and I feel my grip on language loosening bc autocorrect seizes your sentences immediately.
Avatar
Have you ever considered turning it off? I prefer it that way myself.
Avatar
weird mine autocorrects to susan janet ballion
Avatar
I feel the same. The 12-year-old making coding decisions on things like caps, abbreviations, spelling and other issues have no sense of context (or history or manners or many other things).
Avatar
Considering you can disable autocorrect, perhaps just a tad...
Avatar
And when the predictive text changes the word in the micro-second before you hit it
Avatar
No. I watched it replace "gravity" with "Gravity" because more people care about the movie than falling off a cliff. I'm still pissed about that one.
Avatar
It has made me follow you 🤩

Oh, totally an overreaction! I definitely didn't have the same thought yesterday when I had to change "my" back to "MG" for the fifth time in a minute while making a medication list for a new doctor. Big help from the program that also thinks exceumbatte is a word in the English language.

I think Siouxsie would approve
Avatar
Autocorrect is out of control lately
Avatar
Not at this point. If this is the last straw, it's a good one.
Avatar
Not at all. I too am feeling a similar rage build inside me just reading this. Destroying all of Silicon Valley in an inferno to make Dante jealous is the only acceptable response.

I'm booking a plane ticket right now.

Because they presume to tell all Consumer America what to message about? I think they only pre-load "techbro-approved" music/TV/film spellings, and they update autocorrect from their end with any major sci-fi release. Not sure why they'd skip Siouxsie & genre, though—there must be fans in tech.

With any luck all the AI farms will overheat, catch fire, and do it for him.
Avatar
And then Max will reboot Halt and Catch Fire. Like most reboots, it will have nothing to do with the original.
