I love that you like this for the same reasons I do. I do wonder how they will handle the Neuromancer TV show. If it's good I hope they revisit Johnny Mnemonic, it's a fine short story.

Keanu being a wooden block here honestly helps, IMO. Like, that "I WANT ROOM SERVICE" moment wouldn't have worked nearly as well if he WASN'T a wooden block. But yeah, however much we were ostensibly disdainful, us folks who voraciously devoured Mondo2000 took what we could get.

Also, I am a sucker for any movie in which Henry Rollins is a good-guy smart-as-fuck burly dude with no neck.

I would love to see the a combination of both the Japanese theatrical cut (8 mins longer, dif score, more Takeshi) and the 25th Anniversary b/w grade, if only to see something closer to Robert Longo's intentions.

my big complaint about the black and white version is that the cyberspace sequences absolutely do not work that way. also I think the color is a lot of its visual appeal so it is a little absurd to get rid of it

oh no, that bad? there's a few that I'm privately dreading having to ever see again, like The Lakehouse

it is one of the very very few movies i have ever walked out of, and maybe among the worst remakes, ever. Lake House is ...dull? i don't even remember it. Generation Um is also pretty...misguided? idk

stopping a couple mid bj during angels and demons is probably the most confusing way I've ever blocked a shot. like, what about tom hanks' performance in a turgid conspiracy bore acted as such a powerful aphrodisiac

I was working in a cinema when lake house came out and, it being a sad romance movie, we had to have a member of staff in there to make sure people weren't being "indecent in public". so I've seen that movie like at least a dozen times, also, Angels and Demons, and Final Destination 3.

oof. i had to listen to the master pancake theater dipshits rehearse and then screen 2 hours of gay jokes disguised as "riffing" top gun, and that wasn't the worst thing about working at the alamo drafthouse

Did you watch the black and white version as that looks stunning?

100% the best and only way to watch it. The whole film was staged and lit specifically FOR a black and white print, and so many of the very weird and amateurish looking lighting and set designs suddenly makes total sense. The entire movie was *painstakingly* crafted for it.

I seriously need to watch Johnny Mnemonic one day 📽️ I haven't even seen the colour version so I can just jump right into this beautiful black and white photography that was the intended look of the film from the beginning.

Trust, if and when you get a chance to see it how it was meant to be seen, you will take back that part of your review about the film lacking any technical prowess! The whole film was intricately designed and shot for black and white, and suddenly, the weird visual style makes perfect sense.

Gibson is my favourite local draft-dodging cyberpunk author on bluesky, so I'm stoked that you liked this one
